I lived through such a massacre and what I noticed was that the town leaders had done nothing for the local peons...who were also congenitally incapable of doing anything for themselves. Also, said town leaders slept for weeks at a time. In fact, none of them woke up for the entire time--a matter of four days or so--that it took them to die. They deserved what they got for in-game political reasons, but then they or similar players proceeded to whine and moan like the "roleplay purist" pansies they were.

But let's set up a new server with Cantr exactly like it is now, except without tiredness and skills. Then take your "2 or 3 sabre wielding and iron shield protecting people" and go try wipe out Clan Mac Gregor or the Stone Knights of Olip or even my own bunch at New Xanth, and then see how far you get. In New Xanth your sabres are regarded as relative tooth-picks, the acceptable weapons for seniors are compound bows! About nine have been distributed so far. Your 2 or 3 bandits would be dead in a day.

Serenity wrote:....but it balanced the game out in the other direction so lowering the shield protection will balance it back the other way.

Nonsense. It will do no such thing. It will merely make life hell for weakling characters only.

Serenity wrote:It won't be completely balanced....

Ah, now that statement I can agree with!

Quite simply, this is yet another example of a complete breakdown in communication between staff and players.

Yet again, staff have decided to go straight over the players' heads, despite the fact that most of the people that can come up with structured opposition to just changes aren't in the RD.

Serenity wrote:People complain and protest about most of the changes we've made. That doesn't validate your argument as to why this shouldn't have been done.
And just which part of you thinks that the fact we complain means we shouldn't be consulted? Maybe, just maybe, the reason we complain is because the ideas are bad?

Not a single player (to my knowledge) has ever suggested this. Doesn't that tell you something?

This is sheer idiocy. Stop being so stubborn... admit you are wrong and back down. Whereas the change Jos implemented is good in theory (I've said my piece on that thread already), there are no redeeming features of this.

Sheer idiocy.

Cantr isn't really a real-time game for most people, and they usually like to log in, see what is happening, make some changes, and log out. If someone logs in to see that they have been hit several times by other characters, it wouldn't be a very happy event. I like this limit, it would discourage people gathering in large groups, running in and killing everything. The current system takes more thought and planning, but can work equally as well, if done right.

I think they should change the 1 hit a day limit, and increase the defence of the shields then It would be a win win for every one rather than lowering the shield defences

Harder to populate new islands, and harder to live in any of the locations on old islands with a low population. I don't see this change having much of an effect on combat at all...sabers and iron shields or whatever aren't even a factor for the vast majority of characters, and the much more common bone and wood shields are mainly used to fend off animals. So basically this just screwed over all the young characters and means any small struggling communities are going to have to struggle even harder to survive, as if gathering resources wasn't already dangerous enough...

But of course by this point I'm starting to get used to the fact that 99% of the changes are made with just the established characters in mind.

On the contrary, Lumin... None of these changes until this point benefit established characters. Yes they screw over newspawns, but they are bad for everyone.

I think most of these changes are not made with anyone in mind. I think they are discussed, and someone goes "this sounds good" and implements it. At least they better not claim this is made with players in mind, because it blatantly isn't.

I spawned two newspawns three days ago one had the "Luck" to end up on a new island, he's completly defenceless at the moment, but working towards a bone shield, bone shields being the weakest of all shields, having now been degraded, i can only assume will be next to useless, luckily the animal population in his town isn't made up of tto many nastys

But..

I also have a young charector heading into what as far as he, and i know, is completly unexplored terrortory, Due to his young age and the fact he's spent 99% of his life at sea, moving constantly, he too has a relativly weak shield, and only a medium gaurding ability, His shield has now become weaker and he's going to become easy prey for the lions elephants bears etc that will be waiting for him in huge numbers in the town he's heading too.

And..

I have a charector who is trying to build up a completly new town from scratch, he's doing relativley well, however, due to the absence of wood in the area in question (The nearest place with wood being about four towns away) The town is yet too evolve from bone weapons and shields, thus the animal population is pretty high, and it too contains a few nastys, for example, the area in which the town is situated is famous for it's prowling lions, now i can only assume that his subjects, who are all equiped with bone tools, are going to become food, and he would have wasted anout six years and alot of lives.

Basicly i'm doing everything which is exiting about this game, i'm exploring, i'm ruling and i'm attempting to start a new society, now i cant help but feel that all this has gone to Sh*t and that i've been slightly screwed over...

... sorry about that, Just how i feel

I understand how you guys feel about losing characters but this wouldn't be a true society simulator if people didn't die and there weren't any dangers.

It is made with balancing the game in mind.

The thing is these are up and coming Charries who i have spent a fair amount of time and effort playing, and am just beggining to care about. these charectors wern't in any real danger before this change, however now, i cant see them lasting too long at all...

xxx hurts you using a steel sabre. You lose 2 percent strength, you saved five percent with your iron shield. (paraphrased)

Granted, he didn't hit full-strength, but still. Hrm.

When someone attacks you at less then full strength, you don't block at full strength (my guess is that you block a proportional amount, but I know you don't block full).

Really? You don't? ...that's kinda stupid if it's true.
Just because you're older, smarter, stronger, more talented... doesn't mean you're BETTER.

Balancing? BALANCING?

What the hell are you on?

This is exactly the opposite of balancing. Balancing would be tweaking the tiredness and weapon skill so we had a balanced system.

Making it all my characters are pointlessly awful with a shield?

2 Days ago, I saved 41 percent with my iron shield. Now I save 27.

For god sake stop being such idiots! This is a stupid change, made on poor reasoning. This is exactly what I was talking about whne I complained about poorly thought out changes.
