It's frustrating to try and find a way to develop an economy because there's only one thing that everyone wants. Iron.
Pie actually said something I agree with for once... roleplay a little. I've got chars with no use at all for iron. They'd rather adorn themselves with every animal product in the world, or surround themselves with famous works of literature in a cozy library.
Bowser also mentioned that restriction was the key to success, but with the modern mindset that most chars seem to take, all the people doing the restricting are 'bad'.
All of these problems come together to make the big problem that Cantr is missing a lot of the things that society has. Only a few of the problems are in the programming. Unfortunately, it's insanely hard to change the views of... everyone that plays this game. If it were me, I'd have trouble thinking otherwise too. If you can use iron for everything, then why not quest for it? What's the use of the six-chapter novel or the flawless self-portrait? Even things like clothes are all but useless.
Eh. What can ya do?

I have characters that really aren't interested in iron for themselves, though they wouldn't pass up a chance to get some just because of the value everyone else places on it. Since iron (and to a lesser degree hematite) seems to be something that can be traded just about anywhere, it's more or less the unofficial currency anyway.
cous iron is hard to get.
I was responding to the original poster who said coins should be used more. If iron is hard to get, coins are even harder.

well I Do know that in the Blaman regrion I had created gold as the currency and was going great till some idiots came along and killed off the area (mind you this was back before barons...I frist started playing cantr around 300)
anyways, I believe coins can be made of many many differnt resources, I am about to find out as I am making a coin machine as we speak *crosses fingers* but yeah there should be some short of coin thats worth something, creat some short of resource that is worth lots like if you find lets say, gold, or silver, well a company/town/region could make it ileagle to mine accept the "bank" or whatever, then have it be x amount of resources = x amount of silver/gold and then people carry less around and yet still have much to there name, its a thought I am going to try..
haha Bowers I figured out who you are in game ^_^ you have a char in Alenz hills? =p I got a bone to pick you with then! jk, well I did, but hey its a game..anyways...
yeah so I have thought hard about creating a good economy, but the problem is not enough resources are being MOVED around, to much is being hogged to towns, people are not stretching out to towns that say only have food/stone, it seems only towns on limestone/hemiatite/coal/rubber even make anything these days..shoot even gas is better then coal.. or charcoal, but its the fact we dont expan that hurts the game, everyone is to individual, of course I was like this when I frist started as I started back when you where lucky to find a town of 10 people :-p and areas like Krif, and ALenz, and all them where just starting, crazy times..
more thoughts from me..

I will have a room full o fcoins, yes... but I will also have a that much work done for me or that many other resources because people didn't get those coins for free. Besides, I am still making iron there is no way I wil run out anytime soon.

Nobody here mentioned Quillanoi?
Like Bowser's character, my character has taken considerable personal wealth in order to give the local economy a boost.
You can deposit any resource for Quii, and you can use that Quii to buy practically anything from my character.
I mean, what's wrong with that sort of economy?
Oh and my current richest character grew rich through the Siom region economy. Over Cantrian history, people have always tried to gather all the resources they need, themselves. All my character gathers is food and limestone, yet he will soon have a sportscar. Trade, people!

There are societies. Just not super advanced, detailed, realistic or devoloped ones. There are economies. Basket case ones.
It took human kind tens of thousands of years to devolop modern complex societies, and to move away from bartering onto set currency. In fact, in some places, it still is going on. Give us a little time, my man.
And if your so ticked about it, do something.
As for bartering, though, it often makes more sense than modern currency, especially in the Cantr world, with such a small number of people. See, when bartering, you always know what your getting, you always know that so much iron will be worth so much iron, prices can rise and fall more sensibly.
There are not enough people in all of Cantr for a huge devoloped type economy thing.

Ouch, point. Ok, original topic...
Storm, I've seen one of your characters, I believe. The lack of punctuation, and the insistant attempt to name what he's making as "Storm's" was a minor giveaway...
Do you actually think that creating a store that, as best I can tell, will try to sell the exact same things people can dig out of the ground will have any positive effects on anyone? That certainly isn't the way any successful economy I've ever heard of, real or otherwise, worked.

Someone else mentioned this, but I thought it needed to be repeated:
The coins need to be able to be stacked. As of now, each coin I have made is a separate thing. It makes having a lot of coins an anooying thing in your inventory. So NEED isn't the right word, more like user friendly. Its bad enough when you have so many notes and so many keys, we don't need my mouse's scroll wheel to burst in flames trying to get to something at the bottom of my inventory.
