I think this may be the image of a smelting furnace he might have in mind, which does seem rather dangerous on a wooden longboat.

Having thought about it, I don't have a problem with machines on boats. Large boats, not longboats though... give an actual advantage to large boats, considering you'll be boarded by longboats who will steal your stuff...

(EDIT: I may be getting confused with a blast furnace...)

A longboat, I would agree. I think some people on this forum think of a longboat as more of a ship. But in actuality...

...it's a glorified kayak.

The more I think of it...

the more I love the idea of a galleon with several rooms, and machines. A self contained community at sea... Wow. :D

Obviously they'll still need to dock for resources...

This is great. But only on large boats. Definitely not on longboats. They should be limited to cots and bow stringers.

Absaloutely. Proper napoleonic war style War Galleons had around fifty rooms on them.

Well, a longboat can't hold that many people but does hold quite a bit of cargo, CM.

I think the longboat is misnamed. I think of it as a kind of a flat barge because it's so slow.

Perhaps there should be a category of ship larger than galleon called "cruise ship"?

It would need to take a lot of steel.

Long long ago, in a land far far away, I built a cottage inside a Ferry. I could have made a smelter, Stone Table, Anvil or whatever as well as lock people down below while sailing... but I never put it to use.

I did use it once just to mess with people's minds.

I disagree.

You should only be limited by the ammount of space, not some other form of non-described limit.

If you want to waste all of your space on your boat building a smelter, you should be able to.

I think the limit of only being able to build machines inside buildings should stand. Longboats have nowhere to put a smelter... so they shouldn't be able to have them. When larger boats eventually get cabins, they should count as buildings to build machines in.

I wouldn't say it's a non-described limit... they should be advantages to larger boats. Especially considering the obscene advantage gained by longboats as they can dock to larger boats... and retain their locks.

No smelters on longboats!

Are you implying there are no advantages to a large boat?
How about storage or speed?

And yes, there IS room for a smelter on a longboat, in Cantrian physics.

Speed, yes.

Storage, no.

And in Cantrian physics, smelters cannot be built outside. So no, they can't be built on a boat.

My argument is that we should have cabins, and an incentive for bigger boats other than speed. They're not exactly cheap...

In terms of Nick's arguments, Cantrian physics tend to run thier own route, independent of whatever OOC name was borrowed, therefore probably not valid for using photos. However, as Surly was saying, there is a need for storage units (i.e. cabins) aboard the larger ships, which would therefore give them the benefit of secure transport.

I think if that is implemented (rooms, etc), then the longboat would have to compromise for primitive smelting furnaces only, while the rooms can use the advanced smelting furnace.

By the way, Surly, any savvy sea skipper should know if they've got a large ship, they can sail quickly away from a docking vessel. But then again, if the longboat (docking vessel) operator is smart, he'd figure manueverable ways to counter.

A lot more luck than skill involved. Maybe if boat positions were updated every 5 minutes or so it would be easier to track a boat's path.
