This exact thing has happened atleast 5 more times for me, spanning several hours each time. Maybe it's some issue only European users see or something, dunno.
I do use 3 other irc networks an they were all fine, along with everything else, except gnug. One thing that may be happening is my isp isn't following the rfc about dns and caches an old record for way too long instead of propagating. (there is probably a reason if you set propagation time to something small like 5 minutes).
Anyway, I propose an immediate change to a better irc network, this has now been down for 19 hours, plenty of time to respond.

irc.freenode.net ?
Rather large and well staffed network.
We sort of fit into that I guess.

Freenode provides discussion facilities for the Free and Open Source Software communities, for not-for-profit organizations and for related communities and organizations.

Not really, sorry. Though I suspect that most medium sized networks (and up) will have many nicks taken.
That's the tradeoff I suppose, either have a larger, more reliable network or have the old nicks.
