Gifted from birth...
In real life, people are born with special gifts, for example, my sister has a way with words to match no one in my opinion, and this was apparent from birth. i think that Cantrians should be given gifts, not nessacarily made known to them, and automaticly chosen, so say you were 25% more likely to kill in hunting than others or, you finished a project 10% faster and gained more yeild from it. If RL people can have talents, there is no reason for Cantrians to have them too....

Yes but i mean present from spawning, and a noticable, if only slightly, improvement on hunting, gathering, mining or traveling.

All the solidly verified skill effects are present from spawning...as far as I can tell anyway.
I'd consider hitting lions at 61 with a crossbow to be pretty positive. One of my characters does that.
You can have above-par skills, in the things that you can have skills in at all. They just don't get as much mention as the below-par outcomes.

You are aware, aren't you, that you can currently have one newspawn score above 50 with a crossbow and another score roughly 10 or so. So my decidedly snide comment is how much more friggin' giftedness do you want?

Seriously the only skill that anyone complains about is how hard they hit and if you belong to an organization such as a guard than it really shouldn't matter since you are never going to be the only one hitting someone and it is likely the person you are hitting is just as bad at hitting things and defending themselves.

What about a one on one duel to the death over honor?

I have a character that's good at mining stone.
I had one that was good at collecting wood.
Unfortunately its much easier to see when they are good at something... I'm so used to my projects coming in under my specified target, I only notice when they go well...
Seriously, someone from programming should just out and tell us what the categories are. Please...
