Tempered steel
I was just thinking about all the locks out there, and how some chars can snap them with ease while others can try for days. I thought maybe if there were different options for locks. The common Iron lock, the Steel lock, and the Tempered steel lock.
Making Tempered steel would have many benefits. It could be used to make better weapons, stronger, and wear less. But to make the tempered steel, you would have to work at it. You would need to heat the steel, then cool it quickly in water. and repeat the process. The outcome would be tempered steel. Much stronger. Crowbars could be made of this that would allow even the unluckiest char to pop and iron lock. But if the lock is made out Tempered steel and the crowbar is not. . . have fun. If both are made of the tempered steel then it would be much the same as now.
Point of this would be to make a stronger steel to work in the game. Cars, buidlings could call for it too.

Different kinds of locks and lockpicks have been suggested many times before and I really think it would benefit the game.
Just heating steel wont temper it. It has to be cooled real fast and then heated again. But the point really was to make a stronger steel that took more effort to make, Could even make the char have to have a leather apron

That's what I meant, longer build time by heating and cooling it. Still uses the same steel though. You would also have to temper the steel when the item is nearly finished, so you wouldn't be able to stockpile tempered steel.
Besides that issue, I don't think we need stronger steel. A lock could as well be made from regular steel (instead of iron) and adding duplicate versions of regular steel weapons with slightly increased properties seems kind of pointless.

Pretty in pink.

What about steel locks -as well- to be twice as resistant as iron locks...
Implement lockpick sets made of steel to -unlock- doors and the crowbar to -break- them, like a screwdriver to an opened lock would make it more interesting...
Increase production of crowbar to 450-500g of steel and put the lockpicks at 215g. Move the -breaking a lock- project to one worth a solid time and make the -Picking a lock- project with lockpicks, one of chance like the crowbar is now but with less...

but this's strictly speaking not the right thread for that.
Sure it is. It's a thread about tempered steel and it's many uses and lock picks made from tempered steel is a good add on to that. The fact that they are not added IG yet or were suggested many years ago if I remember right has nothing to do with it...it was a suggestion on how tempered steel could be used to make lock picks and IF they were to be added to the game, how a player see's the best way for it to work...That's all. No one said Lets add lock picks.
I'm not an evil Vindictive genius. I just like to help Karma along some times.

No... a hide test is a needless complication to the game. Lock picks are a good idea, and have been suggested many times before... I've always thought it would be a more interesting game if instead of just smashing locks, old joe trader could come back to find his house burgled in a most professional manner. The only hide thing I think should be shown is not having "You see a man in his twenties attempt to pick a lock" I reckon it'd be more useful for people skulking indoors and trying to escape prisons. Definitely should be an invisible item.
