The reason cooking is so hard (besides the shovel thing, which is stupid) is that there is no fuel in most places. In the real world, it's not a 5 day hike to firewood, as a rule. Also, sociedies in places without fuel have been known to burn dried dung as fuel.
And for the shovel thing, considering how little meat a firepit cooks, couldn't you just make it with a 'digging stick'? That would be a really useful low end tool: It could aso speed root vegitable harvests somewhat.
