The majority could have if they wanted.
90% of my current characters (within 2 cantr years) have got more/better stuff than would be normal for the luckiest 40 year old when I first joined.
Newspawns get everything handed to them these days. Theres no need, and in most cases reason, to go about doing anything any more.
Get over yourselves guys! Life as a newspawn sucks in some places, others are amazing places and this has nothing to do with the degree of civilization. In some places the lack of things and available resources make it hard to aquire 'things'. But one of my chars is having a ball and another struggles. As for the big towns - same story. One could have what ever they wanted, but life is very interesting and full, with lots to strive for. Another was ignored and got up to all sorts of antics, to no avail. So, direction, opportunities and interaction with others all count to keep new players interested and playing. Stop griping and change it if it irks you. (in game) And be good to the newspawn! (no, that doesn't mean give them stuff)
I never ignore a newspawn, if you speak I will always respond and am probably the first one to say hi and hand you something simple.
I try to ask questions as a newspawn, giving the other players something to answer, not just can I have a job or what do you do around here. Those are so so boring. Its not a job interview. Also the giddy girl that goes through all the men in two or three days drives me bonkers (and will likely get you killed in some places)
I work on things like trust, loyalty and the willingness to do things others dont want to. Wandering outside once a day for an hour to chat or make a comment on something you see happening lets the others know you are still playing and doing your crappy duty as the youngest. This goes a long way in any town I have any say so in.
I have 15 chars so they cant all be the sh*t, I keep the others for the day that some smuck comes along and kills a rather active one, at least I'm not scrambling with a newspawn that has nothing to start my next adventure. You would be surprised how many chars I have that were doing nothing to suddenly become something interesting just because someone wandered into town or someone died leaving them with more crap than chars Ive worked for years( I hold the biggest pile of XXXX because of a sudden death, but Im not telling you). Perfect example I had a personal guard that followed someone into town, a man walked out and spoke to her. I look forward to every post that person makes, and I watched him as another char not move for years and years. You almost never know who is behind that one soul that might just make your cantr life a bit more interesting

On the other hand my very first char was Occed to learn how to be a newspawn if It wanted to be taken seriously. You can imagine how I wondered how much more newspawn can I be, when I had only been playing for a day.
Just some personal thoughts, hope they help some.
