The Blojt area, right?
It'd be a close call. I know the Alexian Empire, although known as the Lad Empire, was going strong when I joined the game in the late 300s, but I'm unsure when the Commonwealth began.
Is the Commonwealth what came out of Wu Tang and those people, organised by those people? or is it something that sprang up to replace them after they died?

I have a disillusioned governor/ holy manupset at the fact that the empire either killed or drove away all his friends.

Theres about 5 people, one inperticular, that are holding the empire togther at the moment. Once their gone its over, the rest will either sleep themsleves to death or simply go their seperate ways.
That could be said of any cantr organization. It's just how things work, sadly. I think it's due to a lack of dependability. Keys, access to resources/vehicles, weapons... 1 to 5 have control over these things in any given organization because of high death rates and a low trust level. I think, at least.
