If I remember correctly what my character was told, he stole some stuff from the place he was killed at. While his Noniwrok maps are great (though not ground breaking), I should point out that people that try using his world map in any other direction other than the ones he took tend to get lost when heading between islands. I think it says somewhere in the world atlas that it's not to scale, but it's not a prominent announcementAlso, he was one of those irritating cartographers that put his maps oriented north.
All in all, my personal assessment is that Gallagher is truly the first person to (indirectly) link the two English zones, but any other contributions are really blown out of proportion.
