Start of a town
How do towns start? Do players have to find an area or do some players just spawn in an empty unnamed location?

Your character won't spawn in a completely empty location, because there must be at least two characters already in the location for a spawning to occur. (Anyone please correct me if I'm wrong here... its been a while) However, your character can move to another location, many of which are totally empty save some resources and wildlife. There you can start your own town.
I recommend that you stick for a while where you spawn, however. There are advantages to this most of the time, with some occasional exceptions.

Thanks, that's the type of info I wanted. I've always been interested in starting my own town.

I believe you can spawn in a completely empty place; but only if two characters have passed through there very recently. But I might be wrong. I think I've heard of it happening very rarely.

What would be the best way to find an empty location to start a town?

Re: Start of a town
The best way to find one is to have a character travel until they find a suitable spot. Of course, a character inclined to travel and with a desire to start their own town. There are plenty of places out there. Not so many people to fill them.

Try to get a ride if you can...word of warning, walking can be VERY slow.

Re: Start of a town
It makes sense to either pick a town that has at least one significant tradeworthy resource that's not available anywhere nearby, or enough resources to be self-sufficient. I run a couple of towns that have no significant resources. One relies on getting resources from elsewhere and turning them into products, while the other one is past productive stage and no one feels like doing anything. One town has a good start with two out of three iron ingredients + wood right there, food 1 location away and the third iron ingredient two towns away.

Re: Start of a town
Here is a very simple step by step pretty much.
Build a colony. Just work in a CITY not a town but a city your pay is a lot more work for a large ship, tools, supples, wood, weapons, metals blah blah. And get a group together as well recruit a little you will get takers. Then go sailing and use a map for godsake and ask what islands are more empty pick a coastal town and move in. End of story. If you do it inland the town will die out. You need trade so bring supplies to build a lighthouse. and harbor. and pick a spot that has something useful.
