The Surly Cantrian wrote:That is exactly the opposite of the point I was making... I believe that because of the 'society simulator' tag, those societies that do appear are in no way natural. I believe that Cantr should in no way be seen as a simulator for society, western or otherwise, but rather as a tool for individual characters. By defining a 'society simulator', you effectively restrict Cantr to western social structures, where I believe there should be an open platform for individuals to pursue their own interests, regardless of a social background.

Ah, I see what you're saying now, although I tend to disagree. Cantr's society is developing in the same manner as human societies, not western ones. Any society is the sum of its residents, or "characters" if you will. There's no restriction to the term society simulater, except for the tendencies of the human players to play their characters as if they're, well, humans. To the best of my knowledge, for all of recorded history in all areas of the world, most people have clumped together in settlements, small or large, making do with what's available to them, setting rules for the people who are there to follow, and complaining about the state of affairs. So Cantr's settlements and the characters actions are indeed a true representation of all human societies, as would be expected since (I assume) all the players fit into that category and only have their own minds to draw from.

While every society has those who choose not to follow the norm, human nature evidently is to go along with the group, as it's been done for all history from the western cultures all the way back to ancient Egypt and as far back as is recorded. This will obviously manifest itself in a roleplaying game. I don't think any of us that have been grouped in the society simulators expect cultures to be western or otherwise, we just are a bit more strict with the laws of physics, whether or not we say so in-game.

That sounds like a bunch of RPers cut with the same cookie cutter. I prefer to free-style it with a butter knife myself.

You probably didn't mean to make it sound like this but it sounds like your implying that all characters that are well RPed are against crime and tyrants and such. I think if somebody spawns into a bad situation they shouldn't always know its a bad situation. Lots of crime and a brutal tyrant can give you a lot more opportunity to develop an interesting character personality than you could in a happy, council run, potato welfare, paradise where the most interesting thing to happen in a decade is a newspawn note thief.

Actually, i said if
........If a town has good role players, that means that there is going to be hate crimes, tyrants in power.......

What I said is fundementalley tru. If you roll play good, than a few people will hate you, for their oun resons(Unless their is nobady to hate you.). If you don't roll play good, then nobady will notice you, and in turn, nobady will hate you, or like you for that matter.

As for Tyranni, If you roll play good(And the government CAN succome to corruption) Then you will hate somone. If you hate somone/group/race, then you will probably be really unjust to them, unless, as i said, the government is a western democratsy, and people get a voice, wich dosen't happen much in cantr. You, in cantr, come to power, no matter how little power that may be, or you stay a stupid potatoe farming newspawn without anything but potatoes, and have no vote in the matter exept if you ralley a large amount of Stupid potatoe farming people or people who are kind and generous.

The only fault with this phelosofy, is that if you have a very kind, patient caracter, you won't do hate crimes to anyone or become a tyrant.. but.... Power does corrupt, and you might become corupt.

Surly, keep in mind those of us similar minded to me know Cantr as a society simulator, not a society replicator.

edit: to explain a bit;

Unless Cantr literally scoops all of us up and puts us on an undevelopped world, and somehow manages to wipe all knowledge from our brains, it won't be a perfect replication of human society.

Cantr tries to make it as similar as is practically doable by a staff of volunterr programmers, to a real life society. There are different conditions we have to deal with, for instance that we're not awake all the time, even if you slap us or stab us. Also, pirates are more rampant here because swimming doesn't exist, among countless other things.

But differences aside, we deal with problems. Society comes up with solutions to these problems. Counter society comes up with more problems, and so the process of society goes.

A RPG is a game you go into as yourself, with a personality twist. I have less attatchment to my characters than I may have to my level 40 berserker warlord or whatever in another game. I stick with Cantr to see the history of different societies from different points of view, not purely for the conquests of one or a few of my characters. When I think about Cantr, I think about the rise and fall of Lad... the shifts in power of KDS, the **** measuring test that is K-Island... Not about how my character got married or managed to steal a lot of iron or whatever. These things are trivial compared to the society that is Cantr.

Actually, Nick, you have a very valid point there...

The world of Cantr has been started, and set on it's way to grow however the violent world sees fit, not in accordation of our current world.

You see, it's like a tree- Cantr will grow into many branches, and new parts/aspects will be added to it when due. For example, in the current Cantr community, a computer is not a capable or commendable implementation to put in. However, the next step in the current world COULD be the taming of animals, as the Cantr world is now ready for it.

You must remember we are not replicating our world where a need for a computer is just so very vital. In the current Cantr world, computers are not a necessity.

Note: The computer was just an example :P
Evolution is unconformity.
