We've had several cases of buildings vanishing due to names having special marks in them, such as dashes, commas and so forth. So to be safe one could only use letters, numbers and spaces, but that's not fair seeing that some buildings in Cantr do have periods and such.
I think people should be informed of which characters can be safely included and if there's some way of getting around the ones that cause errors (for example putting a / before such a character or something similar to that) - since ProgD has been able to restore buildings with special characters in the name without removing the special character itself, that suggests there's a way around it.
This doesn't sound like it's supposed to be a state secret, so why the lack of information?

That's academic as the problem has been fixed several months ago.
You should now be able to use all characters in building names with the exception of single quotes. If you do use a Single quote it is automatically converted to `
EDIT: Oh and there were no workarounds which players could have done - The problem was that certain characters broke the parsing routines used in automatic building creation. ProgD's intervention was just a manual creation process by editing the database
