Rocket Ship/Capsule (not a "flying boat/car") type

Postby genki » Sun Jun 25, 2006 9:52 pm

I am not talking about creating a new vehicle class that is like a boat but that can travel over land as well and dock to any location.

A vehicle to be called "Rocket Ship" or something similar could be built. This ship would be immobile without construction of a "Rocket Engine" inside it (similar to the way Car Engines are currently built). The Rocket Engine would still not make the Rocket Ship movable in the traditional sense. The engine would make available an action called "Launch" or "Blast Off" which would transport the Rocket Ship into "Space" for a certain amount of time. Upon the expiration of this time, the Ship would "Land" at a random location (chosen from all locations, regardless of population). That is, the place it lands is not specifiable or predictable. The rocket ship would then either require construction of a new engine in order to take off again or become a de facto permanent feature of the landscape (permanently immobile).

This vehicle could serve the following purposes:

-Spread influence of a culture to faraway locations.
-Ensure survival of a culture in jeopardy.
-Let those loners we all know have a chance of _really_ living a life of solitude.

An obvious ramification of this vehicle would be that anyone departing in a rocket ship would most likely never be able to return to or send a message to the place they departed from, and the inhabitants of the town from which the rocket left would never learn of the fate of those who departed.

There would of course be a miniscule chance of the ship landing one town away, or possibly even the town it left from.

Umm...... well, two things to say, the first is that this is a -little- beyond the current technology level in cantr

And the second is..... well..... this would kind of make -everything- that the sailors have been doing in the past two real years to explore new lands completely useless, and make exploration too easy in cantr

Sorry, but I don't really like this idea

"Beam me up, Scotty!" An ambitious suggestion, however I think this will never happen. If characters want to live by themselves, then they should either go somewhere quiet, or remain at home and bitch about how noisy it is.

I once suggested motor boats, a far more practical suggestion, but even that would probably upset the game dynamics. I'm not saying such "disruptive technologies" should be banned, but much thought must be given.

That second link of Sho's is pretty tenuous, rocket in the context of the plant. I'd much rather see the helicopter implemented first, along with music... queue the Apocalypse Now recreations.

He never struck me as insane, just very detached from reality. I suppose Coppola wanted to convey how little the commanders really knew about the actual fiighting.

Either way, it's a classic
