Let us forget our year of birth!

Postby nitefyre » Mon Apr 03, 2006 7:32 pm

Continuing on from here: http://www.cantr.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8618

I'm wondering why exactly we, the players, need to be reminded of our year of birth? Have we, the players, become so involved in the game that we would forget our year of birth? If we, the players, have become that unproductive in life, so ready to forget this key piece of information--which on the page, does not tell you the day, let alone month, or the names of your mother and father, and perhaps the easier to forget names of your grandmothers and grandfathers, or so forth through the generations--is it not time you took a break from Cantr?

Please, get rid of the "year of birth" on the account's page, and put some thought into lowering the information overload on that page. Considering the breadth and depth of Cantr staff's specialties, there must be somebody out there who specializes in web design and layout, or let alone interior design IRL, who can help streamline this page.... Whenever there is lag of any sort--this page is one of the few I have problems loading, with all the pictures and links and text.

All I really want to see are my characters!

Also, instead of showing the links to the Cantr Webzine, Voting, Staff Recruitment, Discussion, Player Menu, Game Administration Menu, Paypal, etc in 6 tables, I think we can get rid of a few of those (I mean, the Discussion links are already available on the mainpage) and make them available in 3 tables. Sure, they'd show up less often, but within a week (or most of us, a day), you'll be guaranteed to see them all anyways, assuming a new triplet shows up each time.

If people see mostly the same stuff everytime they log in, as they would with the 6 table system under the character list and account info, I think they'd be less likely to really pay attention to them. But if there was less of an overload, and a few things were shown at a time, they'd be more likely to see it, rather than blur it.

Your country isn't really important info either. I know quite well where I'm from. ;) (E-mail and status can be useful to know, though, if you're unsure which you registered with, and if "that fast check" stopped your "on leave" status.

Webzine is on the front page as said. Recruitment should go there. "Discuss Cantr" is bloated and need to be cut down, at the very least. I wouldn't be sad to see it go, either.

Oh, and couldn't these pages be merged into one:
http://www.cantr.net/index.php?s=115845952&page=apply
http://www.cantr.net/index.php?s=115845 ... epartments
There's redundancy already. Heck, I'll pipe up and offer to do the new page for you. (I speak basic HTML, no fancy stuff.)

This is both related and unrelated. What about reminders of our character's birth/spawndays? These could be displayed on the character pages alongside the age, since the only way to currently know is to record it when you spawn, or try to notice when your age increases and then do some deductions from there.

I agree. :) Or maybe just have the spawnday noted somewhere.

Points taken - I'll look into it soon.

I had nicer designs in mind once, but never got to finishing it :) ... Now I'm waiting for Grzegorz to implement proper stylesheets ;)

But I can already take on a lot of the above points.
