Sneaking

Have a option so that instead of simply walking into (or out of) a building or town, you can try to sneak. Every person who can see the character sneaking (i.e. those inside and outside) will only have a % chance of seeing them. But if they do see them, istead of the usual;

"You see a man in his twenties enter coming from..."

you get

"You see a man in his twenties sneaking in coming from..."

This will make things more realistic. If you find an unlocked vehicle, you will have a chance of slipping away with it, with out anyone noticing. Or you could slip into a store room, try and sneak into a meeting or just leave a town without being noticed (perhaps to throw of persuers or just because you want to get away for whatever reason)... just how it would be in RL. Ofcourse, the more people around, the more chance of being spotted by someone who will take action. And it also means that people trying to steal cant get away with saying they were just looking around, as anyone who spotted them would see that they were sneaking around not walking normaly...

You could also make sneaking a skill... those better being less likely of being seen. Meaning that you could have some highly skilled thieves who could actualy make a living from it... something which is almost impossible to do at the moment...

Finnaly, you could perhaps also make perseption a skill... being more likely to spot people sneaking... this would make people more or less effective at being gaurds.

I dont remember seeing any of this posted before, so i hope its a new idea :)

I really like the idea, i dont like the idea of it coming from you though!! (j/k ;))
I think that thieves need to have some sort of skills, it would make the thievery much more realistic, i know a lot of people wont like the idea because thieves arent really liked but as legs said, thieves should be able to make a living.
sneakily breaking locks may be one also to consider with this, instead of it always saying "you hear lock no. X being broken" or whatever there will be the chance that you arent heard so people dont check to see if you are breaking a lock.

Good IDEA! ;) should be implemented

I'd say no to this. There are ways you can pull that sort of stuff off in game already, but you have to be creative and work differently depending on the town you're in. I've been able to hop in and out of buildings, pick stuff up that I shouldn't, and one time steal a van. Many of these while people were online and without anybody noticing or if they did, without anybody caring until I had gotten away with it. I've pulled this sort of stuff with different characters and different methods (carrying tricks of the trade from one char to another seems CR breechy to me) in big cities and small ones.

It's just like in RL to be a good thief you have to observe your surroundings and work with them, getting to know a town is one of the best tools for a thief. I don't think there should be a universal formula for theft, and definitely not one that's hardcoded into the game.

Can't say I like it. Either everyone would do it, or else it would promote a lot of "Did you see him?" talk followed by assassination of the sneaker, quite rightly... but also other innocents.

I think these topics suggest about the same thing, though along with other things.
Stealth
Sneaking around

Like I said before, I think the chance of success would depend on how much people and activities there is around. You'd think that in a crowd, someone would be more likely to spot you but also there are more distractions.

It would be pretty cool if you could claim some person had been sneaking around while no one else had seen anything. This would go together well with a keeping an eye on someone option, when you would see where they're going or not going. Also there might be a chance of stabbing someone in a crowd without anyone noticing.
