English?!
My character Joseph Renard has encountered tons of English in the Dutch town he is in, it seems that english is used to communicate between French and Dutch players, which is not allowed.
I emoted in english once to communicate to them (which is allowed), but then after they saw I knew English, OOC, they give me a note translating dutch phrases to english, to french. I feel cheated out of an RP experience, and I think the players of these characters need to know, that they don't know english. There are even several english named buildings in the location.

Your character spoke in a language none of the residents speak. You were given the only dictionary available to them. There are a few words in Dutch, German and English in that dictionary. That dictionary has been around for ages and copies of it are found all over the island. I have not seen any character speaking to you in English ingame.

I didn't say you spoke in English, I said that you tried to communicate using english, ie: that flamingly CR breaching dictionary. I have seen it around, not saying YOU wrote it, but I think using it is going along with the CR breach it caused is not following the rules.
And "gangster tower" doesn't sound very dutch, or french for that matter. Neither does "storage".
I'm not trying to single you out. I'm saying that a lot of Dutch seem to try to communicate with English. At least the person who wrote the dictionary needs to be reminded that your character knows the langauge of spawning only. I somehow doubt that dictionary was compiled legitimately, either.

The Gangster Tower was a project from the 800's as is the storage. I doubt any characters are alive from those days. I think the dictionary is not much younger. I can't help but use that lighthouse and the storage facility. We have even renamed that lighthouse for ourselves, but we can't change it for others.
I cannot judge whether the dictionary was constructed illegally or not. I only know it has been around longer then my character and having my character not using it, because I as a player have doubts would be a breach of using OOC knowledge IC. He just gave a dictionary to a visitor in the hopes it would help communication.

I didnt say in my topic "hey everybody, t-shirt is breaking the rules, let's ban him"
You're being overly defensive, I didn't accuse you of anything. But the dictionary and all copies of it should be deleted by the PD.

If, unlikely as it is, the English have contacted the French and the Dutch, in their short, unheard of visit I'm sure they didn't get to know each other's languages enough to write a dictionary.
That and, French, English, and Dutch don't exist in game, as netiher does France, England, or the Netherlands. I cringe when I see those words mentioned.

Please do cringe. French, English and Dutch are merely languages. French is spoken in most of France, part of Belgium, Canada and many other OOC regions of the world. It is spoken in some parts of Cantr as well.

I'm sorry if I'm asking a question that was already asked somewhere else, but I really don't have time to look through all threads and this one is good to ask it.
WHY are there lands/areas that have characters of two differen languages (like Dutch and French - mentioned above and German - Spanish) ?
When characters are on the same locationi the have to cooperate so how can they do that if they know only their languages ?
The other thing, which causes that English is sometimes used is that there aren't many German and Spanish players on the land. There are few characters there and they can't understand each other ? What should they do ? Stay in silence ? Then the game is not fun anymore.
Sorry for a light-offtopic. If you know where there was discussion about it (if any) please tell me.

I don't have time to dig up the thread I saw this in, but I believe it's been stated that it's okay to write emotes in English (or in whatever language will be recognized by both characters, even making use of online dictionaries if you have too). But your character shouldn't understand actual speech, even if you yourself know the other language, unless they've been taught a few words and otherwise exposed to it long enough to learn the basics.

Yep, that's the gist of it.
Oh, and I made my complaint wrong, which probably made my point much weaker. The dictionary they handed me was dutch, german, and english. Not Dutch, French, and English. So the point is, they saw me emote in english and knew I would be able to communicate better if I had a dictionary translating english to their language. But with a french character, he has no use whatsoever for a dutch/german/english dictionary.
I think implying that I should use this dictionary was suggesting a CR breach.

Don't be so egocentric, Nick. Your character spoke in a language none of the characters present understood and you were given a dictionary, probably the only dictionary the characters had, to try to help aid the conversation. They did not know what language your character spoke as they don't understand it.
If you think you were given a german/dutch/english dictionary because the player controlling the character knows english you're wrong. If you accept you were given a dictionary to illiustrate no communication was possible, it would look good on you.
Besides, I don't think there was any reason to take a piss out of the characters present. To add a litle IC information OOC.

This is entirely unrelated to the topic, although when my character finds himself with a bunch of people he doesn't understand who are seemingly getting angry, and then he notices that somebody has started a dragging project on him then yeah, he sort of did have a reason to flip out and pirate attack.
Don't take this topic to heart, man. I think that your suggestion that the player handed me that dictionary because he thought I might have been speaking english or german is weak at best. Perhaps you are the player who handed me this note, that would explain your defensiveness.
If such is the case, remember that English is known by characters spawned as English. Not characters controlled by English speakers.

I have two more questions:
1. When a proper dictionary is made, then how many words should it consist of to allow characters "learn" a new language using it ? E.g. There are 30 word translated in the dictionary. Can characters speak the entire new language using this dictionary or can they only use these words which are in dictionary (so only these 30) ?
2. How can any dictionary be made if no character understand the other's language ? The only way of making one would be pointing at things and giving their names but you can't point out everything.
