Much more modular production
I heard rumours of this actually happening... but then it stalled. I think it would be good (for example) to be able to produce "medium wooden handles" and "pickaxe heads", that don't deteriorate, that could then be finished into a pickaxe.
I think this would provide more motivation to manufacture tools, as back stocks of non-rotting tool parts could be made... the tools would still rot in the same ludicrous was as before, but businesses wouldn't be totally handicapped by item rot

The thought behind what I said, is that item rot is killing tool production. There is no point in having stocks of any tool, because they just rot away. It is impossible to have more than, say, 6 iron based tools and keep them in good shape without spending your entire time repairing them. The rates are just stupid... by all means have tools rot over 50 years, but I just spent 28(!) hours repairing my sword and it requires another hour's repair 2 days later.
Modular production would allow businesses to function. Otherwise the entire mistake that was item rot will continue to cripple Cantr.

I really am going to have to back up Surly on this one. It's not that we mind the tools rotting, per say - it's just that they're rotting very, very fast. It's almost impossible to have any sort of 'stockpile' of tools, because they need someone actively maintaining all the tools and keeping them in repair.
On the other hand, food doesn't rot at all... erm.

Yeah! Anthony said several times that he was going fix the INSANELY HIGH RATE OF TOOL REPAIR but I haven't noticed any difference at all. Without this "bug" all my chars would be insane by now. They would probably be throwing old disintegrating tools at random strangers and screaming about how the screwdrivers are trying to control their thoughts.
We've been very patient. This is one of the things that needs to be fixed, please, and don't just say Anthony has to do it. He obviously isn't going to.

That would be the logical continuation of modular production, Seko... and I think that would be great, as long as individual parts don't deteriorate... only when they are part of the finished tool.
