Bread production efficiency

Postby marol » Mon Aug 22, 2005 9:41 am

Bread production is so inefficient in comparision to raw resources like carrots or rice.
I made some calculations:

Code: Select all

Baking bread
=============
Eaten:     48g per day
Daily bread ration can be baked:
  baking 48g of bread takes
    w oven                  0,096 day
    w coal oven             0,080 day
    w gas oven              0,048 day
  ------------------------------------
  farming wheat to produce 48g of bread:
    w/o tools               0,053 day
    sickle                  0,027 day
    scythe                  0,011 day
  ------------------------------------
  grinding 48g of flour     0,040 day

  ==== oven ==========================
  collecting needed wood    0,010 day

  ==== coal oven =====================
  collecting nedded coal    0,018 day

  ==== gas oven ======================
  digging needed gas        0,013 day
  digging needed coal      <0,001 day
  purifying needed propane  0,067 day

--------------------------------------
Total time needed to bake 48g of bread:
  w/o tools:
    oven               0,200 day (6,25 rations a day)
    coal oven          0,191 day (6,62 rations a day)
    gas oven           0,221 day (5,52 rations a day)
  with sickle:
    oven               0,173 day (7,52 rations a day)
    coal oven          0,165 day (8,00 rations a day)
    gas oven           0,195 day (6,45 rations a day)
  with scythe:
    oven               0,157 day (8,54 rations a day)
    coal oven          0,149 day (9,17 rations a day)
    gas oven           0,179 day (7,19 rations a day)

Compare with time needed to farm rice:
  w/o tools:           0,120 day ( 8,33 rations a day)
  with sickle:         0,060 day (16,67 rations a day)

As you can see baking bread is at leas twice slower than rice farming (and rice is not most effective food). Additionally beaking requires much more effort.

All that makes baking reasonable only when wheat (or rye, sorghum) is only one available resource.

I suggest increase baking efficiency by lowering 'eat per day' bread rate or making ovens more effective.

Howgh.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Edit:
One more thing - Wiki says that bread can be eaten with 41 g/day ratio. My sources says 48g/day. Even if I'm wrong, efficiency raises only about 15%, so problem still occurs.

Bravo, raise hard-to-make foods to make bread imprtant in game. And if we're able to scramble eggs and such, why can't it be done on the oven? Makes sense if you ask me.

I think someone is working on this?

http://www.cantr.net/flyspray/?do=details&id=101

I really think there needs to be much more of an incentive to cook in Cantr - either to get healing food or for it to be eaten at a very small level compared to raw foods...

It's been discussed in various places:
The main thread suggesting something very similar is Baked trout, a way to live?
also
here

Considering that it's on flyspray - should this and the first trout one move to accepted...?
Whoever you vote for.

Marol, you're right.

Why to bake bred if we have more eficient rice or carrots?
Why to eat something different than carrots?

Current food system is quite strange

Yes, it is being worked on and discussed. Hopefully there will soon be some good additions, maybe some changes that will make things like fish and bread more "valuable" food sources. But then again, one way to boost the food is for people to get over the mechanics of the game and just make the friggin food for roleplaying flavor. :D

Input is welcome for helping this. I am fond of the idea of giving healing capacity to prepared foods. Would that be sufficient enough motivation though? Are there that many regions that have no access to healing food?

...how many things in life are actually worth the effort you put into it, yet we do them every day anyways? Expecially in Cantr?

On the Oven?

No.

On the STOVE is what you mean. And stoves do not exist.

Well Anthony Roberts, here in American our ovens have stovetops, so I don't see the problem with that. Or if I really need to prove a point, I'll scramble eggs in my oven and show you. :)

I am working on getting eggs in an oven. I have been a bit bogged down with vacation and work to get 'r done yet, but hopefully I can have something ready soon for you. :D

I don't know if I would scramble them in an oven though. I like the quiche idea. :D
