Capital rule question

Postby Celthin » Thu May 12, 2005 9:00 pm

I was just wondering, when you make a new character, do you have to roleplay from the perspective of your character not knowinganything? I mean, I have knowledge from playing other characters, such as how to smelt iron, and so on. Now lets say I make a new character. I really don't want to have to ask people all over again how to make iron, how to make a bow, etc. So can I just assume that my character knows some of these things, like how to make iron and stuff, instead of having to keep track of how much each character knows and having to ask the same questions over and over again? Or is that breaking the rules?

strict application of the capital rule would say you know only what is on the build menus.

However, generally knowledge is a grey area.

I suggest to err on the side of caution, don't import knowledge from other characters, but if you do slip up every now and again it shouldn't matter too much.

Unless you're in a situation where there is no smelter in town, and no one in town has seen one before.
Not common except for in small, isolated towns.
In that instance, you should NOT know.

Often times you can be aware of whether you char is in the position to observe other chars doing things. Like if someone else is actively building a cottage, I wouldn't have my char going "Hey, what are you doing? What's that stuff you're pounding on? What's that you're using to hit it with? etc. Because it's annoying for all concerned. Unless, of course that's part of the personality of your char. But he sees the hammer. Sees that it's made of wood and stone and can logically figure out how to make one.

If your char sees someone make a bow or smelt iron then they know about it, in my opinion. If you are in a small town with no smelter but you have the materials to make one, should you know or even be thinking about making one? That is a controversial subject that most people just side-step. In the new FAQs it says something like you can see the menus but your chars can't so logically they probably wouldn't invent, design and build one but...somebody made the first one.

On the other hand, asking questions and getting help is a good way of getting to know people in the community. Assuming anyone will answer you. :D
