Descriptions behind Buildings/Tools/Vehicles

Postby dgalien » Fri Sep 05, 2003 8:52 am

...ithat would be nice. :)

so it would be easier for non native speakers to know what a darter, soarer, mallet, reamer...
is. not for all things.. (everyone knows a hammer *g*).

bcause there are a lot of special words, that easy to use (online)tools like: babylon.com or altavista-translator dont know.. or the translation/description is not very useful.

must not be in game (behind this tools/vehicles), could be on a static site (to reduce traffic & sql querys)

Yeah, I don't really like the idea of people having to discover everything in-game.
It seems a bit unfair that people living in english speaking countries or well educated (at least in english) people have a much higher chance of understanding these things than others.

Perhaps when(if?) skills come there could be one called "wisdom" or "intelligence" and the higher the value, the more details you get about the different stuff...?

I think it very important that this game not discriminate against (although it is not intentional) those who's first language is not English. Either a description should be added to the items in game, or a glossary with descriptions provided somewhere for players use. This would also help out those of us who are English, but just don't have a clue about some of the terms. :)

Yes, beacuse the general idea of people finding out the unknown stuff by asking others IC looses it's purpose when you can look it up OOC...

That is part of the game. And besides, we are thinking about also making the names of tools dynamic and then it really will be a process of getting to know/find out where all the tools are made for.

When you are born, do you know what a reamer is? I'm 16... and I still dont know what the hell a reamer is... lol. But the point is you should have to be told what things are, not just automatically know things.

All names (roads, chars, tools, buildings, etc.) are only so because people have agreed (implicit or explicit) that they will call this thing by that name. So therefore we should also make the names of tools dynamic, like we do now with charnames, and are planning to do with roadnames.

Names are institutions and therefore should be dynamic. I think we will work with a small description about the tool, not stating its function. Hammer should be something like: tool with a long wooden handle and a heavy steel/wooden head.

I definately would like this, since I don't know what all the stuff actually is, nor what it will look like once it is made and I'm a native english speaker and fairly intelligent (I think!) lol.
