Cantrian food discussion thread
It sort of annoys me that most foods in Cantr I've never heard of IRL, while things I generally eat irl don't exist. I understand the resources are limited and people are unwilling to add new ones, but there are a lot of options that could be made with the resources already in the game and yet new recipes tend to be some obscure ethnic dishes picked out of Wikipedia.
I understand some things eaten in Finland would be completely obscure to people of other cultures, but Cantr already has a lot of Spanich, French, American, even Asian cuisine, so why not Finnish?
Some examples:
Vegetable soup: potatoes, carrots, onions, made in a pot, uses a knife
Fish soup: vegetable soup + any kind of fish + milk and dill
Meat soup: vegetable soup + meat
Carelian pies (would have to be called something non-related to geography): rye flour, rice, rolling pin, made in an oven
Egg butter: boiled eggs, milk (or butter if that suggestion gets accepted)
Baked fish with lemon: salmon/cod/rainbow trout, lemon, dill, baked in an oven
Grated carrot: carrot, pineapple, new tool called grater, knife
Mämmi: rye flour, malt, lemon (actually orange zest but since we don't have that), grater tool again for getting the zest
Mushroom salad: mushrooms, onion, eggs (for mayonnaise like in potato salad)

Seem like good ideas to me. The only things I find obscure are Carelian pies and Mämmi, but that's okay. Besides, Cantr is made up of many different language groups who technically should have their own types of food.

Re: Cantrian food discussion thread
I always like suggestions that would give existing resources more possibilities and I do enjoy a lot all the new implementations on foods and clothes. Plus, I love the idea of having more soups! And oocly love learning about other countries' recipes, so I like your idea a lot.
I also have a tangential doubt and I didn't know to whom address it. The unwillingness of adding new resources comes because we already have lots and some would not be very used, thus making the work worthless, or is it because it's a bummer to program that? I was toying with the idea of suggesting cinnamon as a new spice that could be used in both medicinal and nourishing recipes (and in some other projects like the soap), but finally decided against it because I thought it'd be too much of a bummer to implement and maybe only really few people would actually use it.

The vegetable soup and grated carrot especially jump out at me as things we should have, and all the others look like good ideas. I don't know if the grated carrot I have at home is a 'thing' or just something my mum made up, but we have it with raisins and/or chopped apple instead of pineapple.

New food is always good. It is consumed so it stimulates trade and things dont get stagnant because there's mass stockpiles of it like the case with iron and steel.
I wish ingredients weren't so hard to come by but that should be solved in game unless airplanes are going to be implemented

Re: Cantrian food discussion thread
At first I was going to suggest raisins for grated carrot, because that's what was used in the 80s, but it's sort of icky and nowadays pineapple is more common. One possibility would be to have both options, just like stew can be made either with carrots or barley.
About the unwillingness to introduce new resources, the world of Cantr is so big that it would be difficult to figure out resource placement. I wouldn't mind doing it manually, but some people might have objections about one person knowing where everything is located. I think the main objection is not about the difficulty but the fact that there are already so many underused resources.
I think cinnamon might be a good thing to have, but there are so many things in general that would be good additions. I think if you could only pick one thing, I would go with soy, because it can be used for so many things.

I'm all for more foods. It would be interesting if a food couldn't be made without a recipe object that kinda behaves like a note that can be only copied, giving various regions various specialty foods that they try to protect the recipe from other regions.

Eh, I don't think it'd be a big deal you or some staff member to see the resources in order to do that. That seems to be information pretty generally known anyway.
Another disadvantage though could be that it'd confuse people and maps to change the resources, but there are probably some minor changes with doing, including adding resources to places that don't have any or any significant. I'd say it's something worth looking into.

Re: Cantrian food discussion thread
Currently there are large stretches of land where a very limited number of resources is repeated. It would be good to introduce new resources to those areas.

Wouldn't soup need water? Or, even better, broth?

Meat soup could use broth but many cooking projects don't use water in Cantr, it's just assumed. For example spinach soup with garlic doesn't take any water.

Re: Cantrian food discussion thread
I always thought that had to do with the fact that spinach itself holds so much water. And that it was more of a thick soup.

Re: Cantrian food discussion thread
As an avid cook in real life, I agree with this. I mean really? We STILL don't have cake ?! Eggs and flour? We have ice cream and cookies DX no fair.. and I really really really want to see more recipes with berries! I know they're rare.. but what's the point in having something so rare, if there's only like 1 or 2 things you can make with them, and they're all boring things like raisins or kisiel? I wish there were more possibilities.. like blueberry pie, or strawberry shortcake (I've never seen strawberries but they're on the wiki, do they exist?) And why is there only raspberry jam? No raspberry (or this mysterious strawberry) jam? Blueberry jam? Grape jam? (I hate grape jam but still.. should be an option =P) I was gonna write more but the forum won't let me post more than a paragraph on any threads so I'll wait =(
