Make buckets containers
Is there any reason a bucket can't be a container also? I'd like to put liquid in it.

Re: Make buckets containers
Is there any problem with the contents of containers persisting when they're used as machines? That would be the only reason that I could think of.

Re: Make buckets containers
I don't think so. The only problem is a logical one. If your bucket is full of milk, how can you fetch water with it? This is of course not a strong argument at all, since you could easily put the content of the bucket into your inventory for the duration of the project.

Yeah. I think the role-play value far exceeds any logical inconsistencies. I say let's do it.

So, what capacity would seem appropriate? What is with the water skin, mixing bowl etc.?

Re: Make buckets containers
I'm sure we have plenty of inconsistencies in container capacities just as in other things. I was going to say about twice a tin can (though in reality, it's probably closer to ten times that amount), but a tin can holds quite a bit (2000 grams) already. Maybe 3000 grams?

Re: Make buckets containers
The tin can is perhaps not an ideal point of reference as it's a little overdimensioned. A reed basket holds 2000g, so I guess we could make the buckets the same size. 3000g would be okay too though.

Re: Make buckets containers
Well, the tin cup holds 400g, maybe the tin can should be shrunk to 600-800g?

Re: Make buckets containers
Well, I've seen tin cans with a capacity of 2kg in RL. There's quite a lot of variation in size actually. Considering that we would also cause some minor bugs if we shrunk the tin can, we can better introduce a "small tin can" if it seems important enough.

Re: Make buckets containers
The copper bathtub only requires 1000g of water and holds two people! Probably not a good point of reference either. Given how screwy things already are, it would be fine giving it any value.
How about this? An efficient person can haul 400g of water out of a well in a day. That's 8 draws in a day, so 50g per draw. Since the bucket is a constant size, we can assume skill alters the number of draws per day. So, 50g is low, but it makes logical sense in light of it's purpose.

Re: Make buckets containers
Buckets deteriorate and if they were containers, the contents would become inaccessible when it crumbled away. There's no code that would make contents drop to the parent location when a container crumbles away so it has been averted by making all containers permanent. But if a container was a tool, it wouldn't make sense for it to last forever.

Re: Make buckets containers
What side effects would it cause in the DB if the bucket crumbled away with contents? Honestly, if there's none, I'm fine with losing the contents.

Re: Make buckets containers
I don't think there would be any side effects. Maybe later there could be a cleanup script that deleted all the stuff that had a non-existing id in the attached field (besides 0) but it wouldn't really hurt if the resources were just left hidden behind the scenes once a container was destroyed.

Why not pots, while you're at it?

Re: Make buckets containers
Pots are a good idea, too.
I think the issue of contents of crumbling containers is another reason why this wasn't implemented much earlier. As long as it doesn't cause serious problems it should be fine though.
And while I understand Doug's reasoning, 50g seem much too low. It's a quarter of the bucket's own weight and similar to the capacity of a spoon.
