Transitioning vehicles to fuel

Postby Doug R. » Fri Nov 21, 2008 2:05 pm

Implementing vehicle fuel has been stalled out for a long time now, possibly out of fear of massive player blow-back if it's not implemented exactly right. I'd like to suggest a way to get things on track.

Vehicle fuel has existed in the game now for quite some time. Allowing fuel to enhance drills was implemented, I'm assuming, to stimulate fuel production under positive influences so that adequate supply would become available to fuel the game's vehicles when the final transition was made. From my perspective, I've seen no evidence that his approach has been successful, and if it has, not on an adequate scale (obviously, my perspective is limited to my character's and as such could be skewed).

I suggest 3 key points of progression towards the transition to vehicle fuel:

1: A transition period be announced to the players. The transition period would need to be sufficiently long to allow players to develop the fuel infrastructure that they were supposed to have already developed but haven't.

2: The transition period would be gradual. As of the first day of the transition period, vehicles would run both on fuel and on traditional power. However, as the transition period progressed, the effectiveness of traditional power would be decreased. This would provide an environment of gradual, decreasing speed on fuel-less vehicles, yet still allow motor vehicles to be used to build the infrastructure, which would be critical.

3: Vehicles without fuel would never drop to zero speed. It is only reasonable for a character to be able to "push" his vehicle to the next gas station, albeit at a very slow rate.

Such a "hybrid" system, given a transition period of adequate length, would provide the properly gentle context for the negative influence necessary to get character's on the fuel bandwagon.

Hasn't it already been stated that it will be possible to push vehicles, simply because it would cause a big problem if someone runs out of fuel in the middle of a road and there is no code for leaving or entering a vehicle when it's not parked in a location? I'd assume that with the same code it would continue to be possible to keep pushing the vehicle through several locations, it would just be very slow.

As long as people are announced in advance when the change is going to happen, they should have sufficient time to take their vehicles home and not use them until they've managed to make enough of fuel. I'd imagine that having a gradual change in speed would be difficult to manage.

No harm in reminding people right? ;)
Either way, that transition would be great. There really aren't many maintenance costs right now, so it gets to a point where some old folks with only material goals eventually have everything and then have nothing to strive for. There's no player implemented rent on property, no taxes...

This'll be a great addition to the game once it's implemented, bitchers and complainers be damned!

That's what they claimed they would do years ago! (Or whenever it was.)
Just put in fuel consumption already!
