Shipyard/dockyard

Postby Dapre » Sun Mar 09, 2008 7:34 pm

I searched, found a few similiar ideas relating to this being thrown out in another suggestion, but I thought this deserved a topic of it's own.

So shipyards,
generally do the same thing for vessels that an assembly line does to land vehicles (or then it would just otherwise cut the resource-costs of making a vessel), except it would be a building.
Perhaps like a coaster harbour, but you could only undock from it, or then just simply a machine built only inside a coaster harbour
I see you.
Now I don't.
Or do I?
Maybe I do,
maybe I don't..
Well, I guess I just don't.

I like the idea. Maybe a shipyard could be necessary to build the bigger vessels. Building a galleon out of nowhere in a desert beach is awkward.

What does an assembly line do?

I've always wondered that. I've never seen one about. Most of the characters I've encountered just build their vehicles themselves, with their tools. :?

It's neccesary to make some vechicles' parts. Frames for example. And car build from parts, not from recources, is less expensive in general and faster to make, I think.

Maybe ships can rot and make thier speed slow down so that they would need to be repaired at the shipyards.

I've seen a vehicle assembly line... but I don't think it's ever been used.
The population level makes such things pretty pointless.
But that's a good point about repairs... especially with the bigger boats that need a harbour - a shipyard could perhaps repair them more quickly, or indeed, be the only way a big ship can get repaired.
It'll be a long time coming, though, I'm sure.

Pardon, the proposed idea had nothing to do with "ship rot", one of those "let's excruciate our players some more with our pseudo-realistic additions" ideas.

What's being proposed is a faster, technically advanced way to make ships. Which is on the contrary a thing that rewards and encourages players!

You can't be serious... I have seen three or four in various cities. All were used.

The shipyard for ships repairing thing - I've a question. Do ships need repair now? I do not really know, but I doubt it. If I'm wrong that sort of new implementation could be pretty good (for the biggest ships only), but to be honest, I'm not for making the game more difficult in that kind of ways. However if I'm right and ships are sorta immortal, I'm against this thing. We do not need it, there are so (SO!) many others that should be deal with.

I think a shipyard should be NECESSARY to build a larger ship, not only to make it faster.

You must be in a high level of tech to make a galleon, so a shipyard wouldn't make the game harder. Although, a harbour can play the same paper.

It really looks like a cool idea, but it's true that making the game harder is not a good idea.

Moving to Accepted since we had a discussion in RD about doing this very thing.

The shipyard is an object built outside. We can have cheaper quicker versions of ships, buildable only in locations that possess a shipyard.

I think it should be a building and you actually have to go in the building to build ships. otherwise new spawns could just start a galleon project add a little wood and it could take the town a VERY long time to get it done if they just wanted to make a sloop or something
