GPS-like system
The theory behind this is, you can attach a radio-like small object to your car/vehicle/boat (removable with a crowbar) and you'll also have a little remote in your hand too.
Should your vehicle become stolen, you'll be able to get a general idea from your beacon/remote as to where it is. (ie north-north-west or south-east, etc) to a maximum of three to five locations away.
Originally I thought, hey, perhaps you could attach this to your key, (and of course the lock in your vehicle) and it would have dual-benefit, not only can you sense where your vehicle is should you leave it unlocked and it becomes stolen, but when you die or someone else dies, you can click the remote on the key they drop, and it will tell you where that key belongs.
1337:2 : The Key 231541's beacon indicates to Bob's Boat
Or if it's not on the same location
1337:2 : The Key 231541's beacon indicates north-east

No, no, please no.
Don't implement something that is totally out of the technology theme of Cantr, just to satisfy a few disgruntled ex-boat owners. GPS device? Those require satellites.
An alternative is of course the already suggested telescope and already invented radio; then you can simply triangulate the position of the boat.

Nick, there is no technology theme. Seriously. That argument sucks.
I know there are major flaws in this idea, I'm starting to think this idea could be seriously abused, but at least use one of them instead of hiding behind the flimsiest excuse ever used in reference to Cantr...

A large part of life in cantr is the ability to be a thief and get away with it, if your smart. If you lose that ability, a large part of the game will fall away. Also, anyone who used to own a vehicle would know its location if it ever came near them again, allowing someone with a knack for exploiting to sell a vehicle, then track it down and steal it with ease. Not so good.

Just means we need to always change the locks and GPS on our newly bought vehicles. (which is a sound practice anyway)

OH NO!!!
I dislike this idea VERILY SO!!!!
My 3.1415926 votes are for DROPPING THIS!!!
Plus we have more.... not this ideas that will surfice. such as one of those sun measurer thingies, that measer the distance in angle of the sun to the horizon (it gives how north or south you are) and... longitude could be measured by what time an "event" thing happens in cantr (I smell progD work...) an event such as "you see the sun coming up" or "you see a brite thingy in the sky" or whatever, at differen't time periouds would give you latitude.
just give cantarians the event and the degree and they'll figure it out eventually.
and i have a GOOD ARGUMENT AGAINST THIS!! WEEE!!!
It makes life to easy. and I don't think cantarians are ready for it.
and I will fight TOOTH NAIL AND PIE CRUST to not see this in cantr. ( not going as far as sabotouge of course, heck I still play the game)

GPS is the wrong term for this suggestion. It is more just a tracking device, that emitts a radio signal from a certain direction that can be detected. I don't really understand most of your post pie... do you oppose GPS, or the actual suggestion?
And Nakranoth is right
Standard practice with a new vehicle. You just never know...

Alright, I guess I am not making myself clear, so I'm going to have to ask some questions. Why would this even bring to the game, I can't see what it does thats positive. If its to discourage thievery, is that even something we want to do? And more importantly, a thief must have a crowbar to get into a vehicle, and a thief with a crowbar will more than likely have their own equipment to replace the lock. I just don't see it accomplishing anything.

Radios? If anything it acts like a radio? Have you ever put a phone to your radio's speakers? You know that Blip Blip Blip sound you get? That's what you get on these.
kinvoya wrote:I don't see a need for tracking devices.
Besides two poor examples I gave, Kinvoya, there is another I thought of.
Sometimes, when you're travelling with someone, and they take ages, you just want to move ahead without them (Before they arrive in town). A device such as this allows you to move ahead without them.
Another great use is if you have multiple vehicles. Sure, you need to record key numbers down somewhere, but for a big business owner, or a local army leader, there are numerous benefits.

Umm.. Okay, a little let down there..

..over something that your best argument against is, 'makes life easier'?
Cantr is getting harder and harder to manage, due to the wide variety of new implementations.
Pie: There is a difference between making a PLAYER'S life easier, and making a CHARACTER'S life easier.
The suggestion mainly benefits Player's time, but also helps characters out a little.

A few people here are assuming that they would need to be of infinite range. I'm with Surly. Make it like a radio, give it some range. What will it add to the game? If the thief gets the jump on you and beats you to the next town, taking the next road before you show up, then you have one more chance to keep following. Once he gets out of range, though, he wins.
If the tracking device can be removed (screwdriver, or pincers required as a tool), then an experienced thief could get away with it as smoothly as they do now. (And as a player with characters who have been conveniently ripped off on several occassions, it is not impossible to play a thief.
)
What will this add to the game? It will cut down on the havoc created by the irritating newspawn notethieves that happen to grab an open bike. Not much...but cool.
There are also a few other little tricks that it could be put to use on, but I don't want to spoil any potential game strategy.

ok for the record, I was not drunk.
I hade some cake and some rootbeer.
I really don't know how to put this but... as I have reasently found out that it isn't going to be a GPS system (i must have read rong... or i had to much shugar...) and just a tracking devise, I then must think that I have no reason to hate it.
Well, I don't hate the idea, I don't support it, so I will make no comment.
