Re: Thought or Rant of the day!!!
I swear more than anyone I know, but I know people who don't like it (My mother, for example, has said to use any word but fuck, unless like posted above, you hurt yourself. And don't even think about uttering the c-word if you want your eyes to remain unscratched).
And children. I hate when people swear around children. I mean, it's one thing if it's your own child, fine, but someone else's child, an innocent, are you serious? There's a thing in this world called common courtesy and dignity, and I agree with doug, that your views might change when it's your child and a group of teenagers thinks it's their business to expose a three year old to the phrase cockmunch, etc. Sure, you have a right to say what you want, but are you going to go up to some random toddler and rant about politics, or what religion if any the child should believe in, or maybe show them a video of people having sex, someone being abused maybe? No, because it's not your business, it's up to the parent to decide when the right time is for that, and to limit exposure. They can do that with choosing schools, and monitoring tv, but not at the mall. It's ridiculous to say "If you don't like my cursing, then don't come here". It's not your business to decide that it's okay for someone else's child to have to hear your vulgarity. This self-entitlement generation, harboring traits previously only seen in 1child families, is grating on my nerves.
This is the same generation that will walk down the street, see a heavyset woman in scant clothing, and say something like "Oh god, look at her. That's so gross, I don't want to see that. She should have stayed home". Like though they want the rights to do and say as they please, they're so wronged by others taking the same liberties.
There is a time for cursing. If you wanna do it with your high school buddies, fine. But hold on to your hat, darling, because you -will- grow up one day, and you -will- realise the foolishness of clinging to the belief that you need to say certain words in lieu of others to be understood. I'll understand you just as well if you say "That's so huge!" rather than "That's fucking huge" and I'm sure your friends will too if you happen to use that when passing a pre-schooler on the street one day instead.
Edited for grammar.

Re: Thought or Rant of the day!!!
If your grandmother were to hear you swear, she'd wash your mouth out with soap. But if you'd hear the things old people say when they are with their friends. You'd wash their mouth's out.
I worked with a group of old ladies, among other people too, but things uttered from their mouths would make a truck driver blush. I'm obviously not saying everyone is the same. Things aren't always as they appear though.

Re: Thought or Rant of the day!!!
There's a 99.999999% chance of me not being here between (and including) 2 January and 9 January. I have a chars who if left alone for seven days would probably end up dying. There will be a Wi-Fi café where I'm going, but it's ridiculously expensive to use the Wi-Fi. Not to mention I am obligated to spend time with the people I'll be with and most of the time I'll be doing other stuff.
Anyways....
I drove on a major highway this morning. Four-lane highway, 55mph speed limit (and I went upwards of 60 at one point...I feel special). And then I got to park in a grocery store parking lot. Fun. lol I feel accomplished.

My ROTD is that not enough people will talk to heart the lasts posts of Doug, Gejyspa and Rebma in this thread.
The other rant is that you are in the minority (well, with me).

These are the ethics of a collectivist. It's not surprising that religious texts support this, because most Abrahamic religions are morally and ethically collectivist, but please, don't equate the philosophy of rights with immaturity. I'll pass on your servant's morality, and think about my rights.gejyspa wrote: But anyhow, Doug took the wind out of my sails, but I was going to hit upon many of the same points. First, "rights" is a chimera. Your boyfriend had the "right" to dump you like a sack of moldy potatoes, but how did YOU feel when he did that? The word "rights" does not appear in the Hebrew Bible (can't say I know about the NT). Why? Because it talks of responsibilities, not rights. The poor don't have a "right" to charity, rather the non-poor have the responsibility to see that the poor are taken care of (tithing, corners of the field, forgotten sheaves, gleaning). When you stop talking about what you have the right to do, and learn to think about how others may feel about what you do and your responsibility towards others, and self-constrain, then you begin to think like a mature person, and be a contributing member of society.

Stepping aside the debate going on in this thread (though I mostly agree with Rebma)...
It's the 24th.
I have class.

Re: Thought or Rant of the day!!!
All my kids (except my oldest, probably) have class today. And I have work... (and I should really go to bed, because the alarm is going to ring in 3 hours).
TotD -- Yay! I went 7-0 in Scrabble club tonight!
(and Diego -- that's fine if you live on a desert island, but if you have to live with even one other person, you have to start thinking outside of just yourself. Whether God exists or not is immaterial to this point. Like I said to phoenix... think about how being treated shabbily makes YOU feel, and think "Do I really want to do this to another?" If you answer is "yes", anyhow, then please expect to be squashed by someone bigger than you as soon as they have the opportunity).

A) I do not watch Monk. Yes, he is very smart and even funny sometimes but he always comes on after Walker Texas Ranger which just grosses me out so I don't watch TV then. Or much at all.
B) Doug, I very much get where you're coming from as a parent with the whole "don't want people cussing/smoking around my kids". It's far more than a biological imperative or instinct, and I get that, although thank god, I've not been there myself yet.
C.) I'll start with the smoking thing, which is my big thing. Okay, I get they don't want people smoking in restaurants or stores or whatever, but the bar ban is seriously pissing me off. If you're an adult enough to go to a bar and suck down beers, you're an adult enough to put up with the smoke. Not only has this stupid ban driven up drunk-driving rates, it's put good shops out of business--a local hookah bar in my area had to shut down because he sold alcohol. For those of you who aren't familiar with a hookah, basically it's sort of mushy tobacco (shisha) in a big fancy pipe thing and you smoke it. But the owner had to shut down because he wouldn't stop selling alcohol--which was 25% of his sales. If you don't like smoky bars, suck it up and drink at home dickhead.
D.) Again, I am not not promoting swearing loudly in stores or restaurants, wide public places like that. But if your with your buddies at the bar, and you're joking around, and you say "You asshole." Well guess what? Kids shouldn't be there anyway (though I've seen them) and adults shouldn't get their panties in a wad. I also think if you're walking down the street, and you happen to call your friend a dick, it's no biggie, because--guess what? It's just a word, it's public, GET OVER IT. I completely understand about respect and all of that stuff, which is why I'm not saying going around calling everyone dick and all those other fun words in a derogatory manner, but they've entered our vocabulary as positive colloquialisms and that's just what's happened.

Oh, thought you did because "Shucky Darns" featured prominently in one episode (it was the catchphrase of a character in Monk's favorite TV Show, "The Cooper Clan" (A "Brady Bunch" clone)).phoenixannwn wrote:A) I do not watch Monk.

Yeah, we're STILL waiting for one member of our Scrabble club to do that

No, that particular quote is courtesy of my 6th-grade-teaching mother.
Also, I know I could use other words to describe what I'm saying, but swear words are the very part and parcel of emotional speaking (generally) and they fit perfectly, so why would I bother to find another word? What's the phrase? "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."?
