I used 3 question marks if I have heard it by other means, an emote or know it by another char. It signals to me that my char does not know their name. [Johndoe???]

That's a good idea, I've never thought of that before. If I learn a name only by an emote I just don't even put their name, but I do if my character actually hears someone addressing that person by their name and if I can figure out who it is.

Commonly I give people names like "hungry" so I know which character to feed. And I also name "theif", though I should probably not use the same word for several characters..

And I always put (<CANTR CHARDESC>), and I'm very thankful for the new convenient button to do so.

If I hear it by emote and I'm sure that that character is that character, or if the character introduces itself while my character is asleep, then I put the name and add (ubn) after it, short for unbeknownst.

Example:
2958-2.15: a woman in her thirties says: "I like cucumbers, but I bet they'd taste even better after soaking in lemon juice and sugar."
2958-2.15: Bob says: "*looks at Sarah* I have some cucumbers if you want to try experimenting."

I would rename "a woman in her thirties" to "Sarah (ubn)" because I know her name, and I might emote with her name even though my character still has no idea that Sarah's name is Sarah.

Thieves whose names I don't know I usually put something like "EVIL THIEFER PERSON OF CUCUMBERS FROM MIDGAR" if they ran from Midgar harboring stolen cucumbers.

I don't feed sleepers so I don't worry about naming them.

I've tried the spawning the without a name bit but either end up with a fairly generic name given to the character by the townsfolk (ex: Bob) or hardly garner any input beyond getting given a super basic identifier (the worst case wound up being called Manny, as in Man with a ny added).

My preferred method is spawning with a first name then basing their last name on their surroundings and/or town name. A nice proper name with a little controlled originality.

I had a character who spawned without a name and people started suggesting a whole bunch of them. She just repeated the first one that sounded fitting and it became her name, although lately many people have started using a nickname instead. I don't think she ever uses the nickname herself.

I chalk it up to the limited number of characters I spawn, the large trading/sim towns seem to be my lot in cantr life.

I would love the character that just plain says "Your name is now _____" and my character would just have to deal with it. I've tried nameless spawns but people always shy away at the idea, and since not having a name is a crime punishable by imprisonment in every generic town, I think of one myself soon enough.

I had a char that did this regardless of who they already were. CRBish issues drove her away from her town, though.

I was thinking more of a town leader forcing people into their new names and roles. I know not many would play along, but I would and I'd love every bit of it. I guess that has somewhat to do with how free everyone is to do as they please, something I wish they weren't.

...

This was really just a disguised rant at the lack of slavers.

I would go along with it :) When one of my characters die, my new one will be a slave. with no name, other people can name him.

One of my characters found a note once I think in the Quillanoi region, written by a woman who seemed to be trying to make herself a queen or empress, and the note had all these things outlined like every building in the capital must be marble or brick, only the empress can wear silk, only merchants can wear wool or cotton, and peasants must wear hemp or hide, and the first law was you have to tell the empress your name and if she doesn't like it she changes it. I forget if he only saw the note or if he actually met her, I seem to remember seeing an interaction where a man was running names by her but I could be mixed up, it was back around my first year playing I think. But I thought that was weird, everyone being forced to have names the leader enjoys. Might have just been some young thing's dream before they succumbed to sleeping sickness.

No, it was on Cantr or Hobbes Island, but it could have been a note someone brought from Fu.
