It's fun to build a new settlement. It's irritating to build a new settlement in a modern world full of locked up shit. Just die if you lost all ambition, please. The non-English groups are so boring. I have yet to find a single Dutch town with even a shred of ambition. :(

Yeah, seems most expect polish are sleepy little communities. :(

This would be why my French character wound up hanging out with Poles instead.

Depends about language group, for example finnish group is so middle of nowhere that you can't even do that :D

Overall I think the language barriers are interesting but are usually more frustrating than interesting. One of my Dutch characters interacts with the English, which works because I can emote in English. The majority of non-English players doesn't seem to understand English even for basic emotes, and others simply don't feel like it. I can't blame them. They signed up to play in a non-English language for a reason.

Yeah, it's pretty frustrating. Can't do much to communicate without even emotes. Trading IRL between people who couldn't understand each other would be simple in comparison.

I still don't get the attitude where characters are actually resented because they/their player can't RP with you though, which is something I've been seeing lately in a couple of places.

Anyone can use Google translate, which usually gives a pretty accurate translation. I'll also use this opportunity to share this Wiki page:

I've had fairly good luck in the polish area I had a character in, where most would start to emote english if they saw me active online. But a lot still didn't (and perhaps that has to do with the fact my character was semi-fluent in the language?) I used to emote "english/polish" but I felt like it limited my emoting.

When my aforementioned French character first encountered the Polish, we wound up starting off communicating with English emotes on both sides, which slowly went from "terrible charades" to "terrible French-Polish pidgin". It was quite entertaining, really, although several game-years later that character is now fluent at "bad Polish" (kind of hard to speak better Polish than I can actually speak :D ). They didn't have any dictionaries or notes on French at all, so they wound up pretty much having to start from scratch with managing to communicate.

On a related note, why are so many in-game dictionaries so terrible? By which I mean, "I can't figure out how to say 'iron' or 'sorry' or 'please don't kill me' terrible.

Yeah, the ones I've seen are mostly just lists of resources and maybe tools.

What I really want is a good phrase dictionary. "Can someone help me move my friend?" "Don't hunt animals less than 8" "Is there a project I can help with?" "I'd like to trade [resource] for [resource]" "Drop the crowbar and give me your keys" and so on. :)

"I'm not a pirate, I promise." "Can we hug it out?"

People who abuse what their other chars are hearing on the radio in obvious, but unprovable ways.

Also I have a really bad habit of what basically amounts to RPing a char in my head even when I'm not playing, and it both annoys and concerns me.

Somehow I'm always surprised that more people don't do this.

Watched a documentary about Dickens, and when writing scenes he'd run to the mirror, pull faces, make gestures. All to get the feel of it right. Done the same, sneered and grimaced and rolled eyes at the screen, to the mild bemusement of others around. The waving hands, clenched fists and snarls, well. Less bemusement, more asking if everything's okay.

What annoys me, is the gulf between someone saying something one day, and two years later, with much prodding and poking, still not happening. Just ..... set it up! I'll put in the work and resources if you just ... click! One button! Arrrrgh!

Ugh, yeah. And you said I'd done enough work to earn this vehicle... two years ago! Where are the keys already!? Or towns that leave you hanging on a trade for so long that you might as well have just sailed halfway around the island and gotten the thing quicker.

In short: People who have all the keys to things but don't even seem to really want to actually play.
