Re: Things that annoy or puzzle you about Cantr
I can't give details, but one of my characters is being insulted so childishly and constantly, that it's actually upsetting me personally... I
m not quite sure how to deal with it, I've never seen anything like it. Reminds me of highschool. Makes me wonder why I'm still here, putting myself and my characters through this.

I don't know if it's because people love the so called quirky characters or because they want to be so distinct that they overdo it (for my likes, I guess it's not overdone in their players' perspective), but most of the characters I see around lately are really "caricaturesque".
This has been going on for awhile. I used to laugh looking around certain towns, if you really paid attention to descriptions they would look like freakshows to anyone driving up. It's possible the reason there are so many is because people simply find them more interesting to RP, so they're less likely to die. I generally play completely normal, almost boring looking chars but decided to mix it up this time...just a little. I'm not ready to go full on hot pink hair and elf ears yet

It's hard to give advice without knowing more, but the player probably has no idea they're bothering you that much. I know I've had characters get extremely offended by comments before while I'm sitting there at my computer laughing my ass off, and a good rivalry can be so entertaining...but they may not realize it's upsetting you IRL. I mean, this is a game full of rapists and serial killers and slavers, but I can see how a nasty vicious high schooler would hit closer to home for most of us.
I don't know if your character's capable of this, but the answer may be the same one as when you're faced with that situation IRL: confront them, tell them you're not taking their shit anymore, and if all else fails hit them in the face with a battle axe.

Of all of my characters (including dead characters):
3 have had speech quirks (4 if you count not using contractions)
1 was deaf
1 was an illiterate, childish dwarf
1 is a religious heretic
1 is secretly a psychopath and addict
1 didn't live long enough for me to figure out who he really was
Narrator had his own category of abnormalcy.
In the long run, 9 of my 16 characters could pass as somewhat normal.

That happened to one of mine too, the player obviously didn't know how to roleplay and I think they thought we were in a chat room, it was basically them screaming whore and slut over and over, after knowing my character for about 5 minutes, I got so fed up I had to take the character inside, that's not even roleplay it's just like, trolling other players.
For the record, most of my characters /seem/ normal but if I wrote a list of all their (mostly secret) mental and physical disorders and ailments, I think I have one "normal" character. And even the "normal" ones have allergies, or weird phobias or obsessions. I have trouble making a character with no quirks because then I can't relate and it feels like a cut-out character and I get bored with it. My most normal seeming characters are the ones I rarely play and when I do play them it's depressing. So I gave up trying to normalize my characters and just try to give them different issues, or more subtle quirks that aren't in everyone's face but still make them more interesting for me.
Also I feel bad when my leaders are one of those, getting newspawns who want something to do but there's nothing to do, because I like setting up projects and keeping things running, it feels organized and I always get annoyed seeing a space in my list of working characters. But now I'm stuck using a phone 90% of the time, and so everything takes 10x longer due to my twitchy fingers so I mostly only read events and respond and try not to even touch anything with mechanics because I might freaking disassemble something or break a lock, it's so hairy.. and when I do get a chance to sit down and play cantr on my laptop, I'm either distracted with the drama in a more active character's town, or upset that one of mine is being ignored by close friends or a loved one when they need help and no one's replying, but I'm afraid to pay attention to my leader who needs to set up work because I know THEN the drama will start or the person my character was waiting for will wake up, etc. Then there's times where I keep saying "now I'll get my character to storage and set up some projects" and when I'm looking at the objects and machines I just feel depressed and start thinking how many of these people are gonna be like "this is great leader-person! You're so generous, I want to start a business here/go trading for you/become a doctor/start a religion/form an army" and within a year they've fallen asleep and died even though you give them what they ask for. Then the cycle starts over and at some point it's like "wait, what if I give this person all these tools and crap and they die and leave me with a bunch of half-finished malting projects or a building they didn't complete because I gave them too much freedom?" and I sigh and I click the arrow and go back to my character list and stare at it wishing something would happen... it's really a defeating feeling, it used to be easier, just set up a freak-ton of projects and if they wake and work then it's all good. But now I find myself freezing up, thinking about my personal problems and the rapid decline of cantr characters and motivation and thinking maybe it's not worth the extra five minutes of my life to set up a bunch of projects when these newspawns will still want more and more and I'll never be wakeful enough to keep up, and the ones you do help wait until they have a boat or car or a weapon, and then are like "well you're too sleepy so I'm moving elsewhere", or they go to do trade for you and die on their first trade run (happened to me so many times..) and you have to arrange to get the vehicle and it's all a waste.. and that's disheartening.
Plus once a character is old like my leaders all are, a lot of them get too used to the singular habits of newspawns as they've seen them, and sadly they just feel like "what's the point, I don't know this young person, they might say they want to live forever and drop dead tomorrow." I know they were a lot more optimistic and generous when they were younger, and now when someone spawns it's more like "oh great, another person who wants something and doesn't know me or my life but thinks I'm a bad leader because I'm not making them my priority." which might be totally opposite of the truth but after it happens over a course of seventy years it gets harder to look past.

That's perfectly understandable...but if an older character feels that way I wish they'd RP it! I'd have no problems with a character that was played as being cynical or bitter, my earlier complaint was more about the ones where it often seems like it's the player getting annoyed that their character page is even getting lit up, and they just seem to have zero interest in their character or town anymore. Which makes me wonder why they're even bothering to keep playing them, or at least why they're bothering to keep playing them as a town leader. Doubly so if the player themself is suffering not just boredom but all kinds of stress and depression because of them...no offense miirk, but it can't be healthy letting your characters make you that miserable. Especially over things like unfinished projects.
But really to me the whole thing ties back into that whole culture discussion again. The atmosphere of a town takes its cue from the leader, but it's like there's just something about running a town that sucks a previously vibrant character's entire personality away and replaces it, at best, with some kind of grumpy hall monitor. Get a hobby, get a pet, have opinions about irrelevant things, read terrible poetry out loud to the entire town, actually have conversations with people outside your immediate clique once in awhile, something. I tend to cling to my spawn towns a bit too hard and in my old account I had some really motivated characters I was very into just run out of steam after all their attempts at getting things done or getting involved in the community were rebuffed or ignored. I'm not letting it happen again...Cantrians are spawned functional adults with the ability to reason. If a town is broken and no one's bothering to try and fix it, getting frustrated does no good, and neither does just giving up and withering away along with it. Just head down the road to the next one.
And that's our motivational speech for the day.

Anyway, I've got two characters I think might wind up with their own towns someday, and I've already sworn to myself that if they get old and I ever lose interest to the point where they're doing more harm than good I'm going to make them ignore all those dragon instincts, hand off the keys and go have an adventure somewhere. Or just retire to lie around on a tropical beach. Maybe hire a couple of strapping young newspawns to rub them down with coconut oil. Whatever, it's all good, world's full of possibilities.

I've seen your one character accidentally do something and it made me LOL because I play on a phone and tablet, both of which seem to hate me. I'm constantly awccidentally knocking, pointing at things, disassembling, picking up the wrong things....and then haaving to figure out a way IC to explain why I picked up a crotchet hook when I thought I clicked a log.

Phone is really annoying but hit people with claymore instead of waster and try to explain that...
On side note, people playing with phones are pretty fun to look at then they just point randomly and start clearly projects that they didn't plan and then explain why..

I'm always terrified I'm going to accidentally do that. I zoom waaaay in anytime I'm doing anything important just to be safe.
Anyway, rereading my earlier post and damn, I sure do like to ramble when I'm sleep deprived.

If you frequently make mistakes on the phone, you shouldn't be playing on the phone. It's distracting to have people constantly correct themselves with an "OOC: lol sorry im on phone".
This is coming from someone who plays almost exclusively on his phone, so I know how useful it is. I just save extensive roleplay for when I'm on my computer and use the phone to read my events. It's also useful to keep my characters busy with projects.

Yeah, I wish they wouldn't even bother with the OOC. It's like 'yes, we all saw you randomly pointing at things, we know.'

I remember my phone being really useful last time I had a char in a busy town just so I could glance at it now and then to reduce all the reading I had to do when I got home, but actually speaking or moving around was too much of a pain. I'll make short posts from my Kindle sometimes but I really don't even like to do that. Need a proper mouse and keyboard and a little privacy to really get into the green world.
