I agree that the regular and the primitive smelting furnace could probably be unified. Primitive smelting furnaces have the advantage however that they can be build in the open, which is not unimportant considering how little people are inclined to work indoors.

Possibly, but how often do you see this actually taking place? I don't think I ever have. I think a lot of people to whom this is a serious enough factor to put up with the increased resource consumption of it either don't bother with work much anyway, or just stick to resource harvesting.

I'm not quite sure why we force so much production to occur indoors , given how mind-numbing it is for most people. Of course, some of this annoyance could be lessened if leaders designed their towns properly and had a single large building for machines, with all other buildings as little more than lockable storage, but I digress and we're working this issue anyway with windows/open doors and such anyway.
