Lent is in celebration of the 40 days that Jesus went without food and water in the desert and how he never gave into Satan's temptations. One of the main things is that we can't eat meat during Lent though some Catholics have shorten this to Ash Wednseday and every Friday until Easter. We are suppose to also give up something that we don't particular need during Lent. I think it is only a Catholic tradition and not particularly practiced among other Christians but that is where the sacrifice comes in. We sacrifice something for respect of what Jesus sacrificed for all of humanity.

Yes, Orion, we like to sacrifice big, fat, Calvinist Dutchmen and eat them afterwards. Wait, do humans count as meat? We aren't suppose to eat meat during lent. Oh, well, so much for Lent. I'm on the Atkins Diet anyways.

I guess you missed the whole Thirty Years War in history class then as well as the Old Testament and we cannot forget Revelations. Not forgiving from there. Jesus was the forgiving guy, not God. In fact, many religious scholars believe that God might have smited the world if Jesus had not asked God just before dying to forgive all of humanity for their sins.
