There is currently no damage done to shields or need to repair them. What happened to you orion was obviously someone abusing a bug, and since it happened so swiftly, perhaps cantr did not adjust your shield's damage protection quickly enough based on your health. However, that person did provide a good testing to the system and it appears to work, now that we have the attacks set back to normal.
