Bumping this (and momentarily delurking) because there's actually a discussion of Cantr going on on the forums there. :) (plus the new release with a z-axis is almost out ohmigod ohmigod ohmigod... :D)

Yes, Dwarf Fortress offers amazing gameplay, it's just really difficult to get the hang of things at first. Consequently, it will probably remain forever niche. Reminds me of Cantr in a way, although the focus of the game is completely different.

I just updated and started playing again a couple days ago. I must say z levels are a big improvement. Though I have to rethink some strategies and learn new ways. Their wiki is all of a sudden pretty outdated as well.

The z axis version's changes pretty much made the old wiki scrap, though there's a new wiki up at the same place that's fairly usable. Toady is putting out new versions (bug fixes pretty much only) every week now.
