With one of my first characters, I don't have much of a choice, he was driven from his Engish town and thinks English people are evil and now lives with the Polish, but he has a terrible stutter, it's embarrassing trying to speak Polish and sometimes he gets made fun of =( Also he's getting so used to Polish that the times he speaks English he changes his speech patterns to something similar to Polish, leaves out words and starting to gain an accent, so now even if he does meet English people, they won't like him either because he doesn't speak English as much, and his stutter annoys people. It makes me really sad when he's in a town full of people all speaking Polish and he can understand but he can't talk to them because he's embarrassed and people put so much importance on language and speech =\ languages have never bothered me though, I just copy and paste the entire page into Google translate and read it in English so I can respond to emotes and stuff, and it doesn't bother me. To me it's no different than real life, I go to the store and listen to people speaking Spanish or Chinese, and it never bothers me, so it doesn't bother me in a game either, it's just normal and realistic to me, and it makes Cantr more interesting to me, some of my characters I plan on having learn multiple languages because that's a nice goal to have, and I think it's cool to see mixtures of cultures in Cantr and not all the same thing anyway.
And yeah it is difficult when you're starting, to have a character learn only from a dictionary, but once they have the basics down from that dictionary, it's feasible for them to learn more just by listening and interacting with those people, my characters start off using dictionaries as guides but over the years they're intent and pay a lot of attention and eventually start to pick things up naturally, which happens in real life all the time. So if I wanted to have a bilingual character and there were no people other than English, I couldn't do it because they'd only be able to learn from dictionaries and that's no fun.
Also I think it's really cute when Spanish or Polish people do speak English and they use the wrong translation or word for something, and it also makes me feel better about my own mistakes when my characters are speaking a language and use the wrong grammar or words.
I also don't mind accents, and people who talk funny, I'd be kinda bored if everyone talked the same, I like seeing people in cantr who can maintain an accent for years without fail, or baby-talk for years without being inconsistent, that's hard to do sometimes. I know people think those are annoying, but I dunno, I guess the way other people talk has never bothered me my entire life, so in a game it's even less of a big deal, and well it should be like that, I never go anywhere in real life without running into someone speaking another language so why should Cantr be different? I think it'd be really weird if the languages never mixed, and we would lose a lot of opportunity for character development, bilingual characters and world traders, and general roleplay. But that's just my opinion =) personally I find many languages more attractive than English, it's a bit crude and it's actually way harder to learn and understand for other peoples, than it is for English learners to learn those other languages because we have really weird grammatical and spelling rules other languages don't have =P
EDIT: Actually, I think I would go so far as to say, what annoys and puzzles me about cantr is how easily annoyed and puzzled people are just by someone being different =P though, it is a primitive world and it makes sense for people to be intolerant or even racist, it's just kinda sad in my opinion, but I feel the same way about real life pfft. No universe is perfect I guess
