Random geek fact: That description has already been claimed by Gene Roddenberry as his original plan for Star Trek

Yeah, but Roddenberty only pitched it like that because at the time Westerns were big on TV and unless he pitched it as a western than no TV exec was going to listen to him.

Anyways, Firefly/Serenity is the true cowboys in space. It is really the first time (since perhaps Cowboy Beebop or Outlaw Star if you count anime) that Sci-Fi and Western have been blended together. Plus Firefly/Serenity have about every other genre in it. There is horror (Reavers), X-Files (Hands of Blue and River), ER (Simon), Romance, war (Beginning of Serenity and the Message), Comedy (some of the best one-liners ever!!!!!), and Thrillers (a lot of near to barely close escapes.

I detest most sci-fi, but I loved Firefly. It hardly even fits into the genre.
No aliens. No "quasi-whatever ray guns".
I also thought of Firefly as more of a western.

Oh it's definitely sci-fi. But it's in the same emerging sub-genre as Cowboy Bepop and outlaw star, it's just probably the first live-action version of that genre to be made and done well.
