Re: Old Vehicle, New Continent
I like the idea of a crane which would be necessary to load ships with vehicles.

Re: Old Vehicle, New Continent
A crane wouldn't make much sense for a bike or skateboard though and I also suspect that it could complicate proramming.

At least RL skateboard or bike, but somehow I don't see those having locks that'd prevent people who don't have a key from sitting/standing on them.
It's all Cantr. We can make the crane neccessary if we want to

And if we want to, we could make it not necessary. I don't quite see your point.
Vehicle locks could by the way be removed from (new) skateboards if that's desired by the players.

Re: Old Vehicle, New Continent
If there would be a code for loading vehicles on board, all we need to add is a check if the crane is in the location. If not - loading impossible. Sounds simple that way.
Another way crane could work - if we use dragging for loading - crane would add his strength to every vehicle dragging action.
It doesn't need to be called crane, it could also be a ramp. Or ramp would work for small vehicles like bikes and skateboards, and crane for cars etc.

It'd be cool to allow bikes and skateboards to be locked, but only in use. So you could still sit/stand on them.

Bikes and skateboards are locked and lockable by default.

I like Piscator's idea of vehicle taking up space in the sense with chars, would definitly lower the amount of vehicles you can take aboard.
Maybe you must have a ramp in the location to be able to load/unload the heavier vehicles, and maybe a additional bigger door or thing(programwise it could be a extension to the boat or machine) in the boat. This would result in the need of building the extension both on land and the boat to be able to load/unload vehicles.

Re: Old Vehicle, New Continent
Wouldn't the easiest way just be to allow vehicles to dock to boats at the same location? That still makes some more coding work I'm sure, but the interface wouldn't change much. We could implement a vehicle capacity separately, have them take up some of the person slots, or just deal with it the same way we already do with docked boats.

Except you can't dock big ships to land and can't bring cars into harbors.

If we had a mechanic to dock a car to a boat, we could as easily dock it to a harbour (and then to a ship).

bikes on boats
Would it be possible to load bikes or other small vehicles on to the larger boats, rakers or galleons. I've seen a situation or two where a character comes to a shore with there well earned bike or other vehicle only to have to leave it behind if they want to go trading or exploring.
So was wondering if something like being able to load bikes and other small land vehicles on to boats that could handle them would be feasible or if it would be too much of an issue to implement.

If we changed bicycle assembly to a frame and two tires, we could make assembly one hour and disassembly one hour. You could then essentially pack up your bike and take it with you anywhere.

Re: Old Vehicle, New Continent
making the bicycle/tandem bike, and similar into componants that can easily be disassembled and reasembled in an hour is not bad and makes them transferrable even on a raft it works
are we still considering larger vehicles as well?
we could make the motor vehicles disassemble as well and reassemble, the disassembly, doable only by the keyholder, instead of just any random schmuck holding a screwdriver.
though i know people may like to move a motor vehicle in whole since a road motorcycle with sidecar and engine takes 8 days assembly but... we'll take what we can get
edit....
after a few minutes i thought.. why not make disassembling a vehicle turn it into a vehicle package object with the weight of the vehicle, this way you can preserve the key instead of having a useless key and taking up another key number in the database unnescessarily... if the package is light enough a person can carry it, if not then it can be dragged. it can then be acessed for reassembly by the/a keyholder for that vehicle
with this idea, we could either keep the reassembly time the same as the original assembly OR because it is a new type of object we could make assembly quicker..
just a thought i had.
