I don't think my family has any Irish. Mainly German, Italian, some of the Germans have some Dutch. Only one of my grandparents was born in the US, but she was not conceived here. That makes me second generation, and therefore not solely American.
Hunter would appreciate that my mother's grandfather sailed on whaling ships in the North Sea, from his home on the island of Amrum (Nordfriesiche Inseln).
One branch of our tree was believed to reach an Egyptian king from way back. I find that hard to believe, simply due to the fact that much of the records that would point that far back had to be sketchy at best.

You have to remember that Ireland had a huge population at one time before the potatoe famine. Those that didn't die (which was in the millions) had to go somewhere. I believe the population in Ireland before the the Great Hunger was 9 million people and I think today Ireland has only returned to about 5 million people. And during the famine it went from 9 million to like 3 million people. That is 5 million displaced people (I think around 2 million or so people died during the famine or on the Coffin Ships). Those millions of people went to America and Canada and it was very common for Irish families to have a lot of children but the thing about the Irish is that throughout the centuries they have never lost their cultural identity. The Osman tried to change them. The English, the Anglo-Americans and all of them have failed.
The saying is that you can take the Irish out of Ireland but you can't take the Ireland out of the Irish.

I can pretty much guarantee that your family origins are in Ireland with a name like that. How far back can you go?
If I remember correct, our info goes back to the mid 1500's, but I'll have to look at it again to make sure, I might be wrong. If I can get it from my father (We got it for dad as a present, we are big on family history) I will try to put some of the main information on the forum here, as there are other families that merried into the McIntosh Clan to build a stronger clan.

Okay I got some information on McIntosh and found that I made an error. I believe that I had said that Macintosh isn't related while Mackintosh was. It's acctualy the opposite. Here's the info that I found
Definition: Son of the chieftain, with -in- meaning 'the' and -tosh- representing Toshack, from the Welsh 'tywysog' meaning 'prince.'
Surname Origin: Scottish
Alternate Surname Spellings: MACINTOSH
More Resources for the Surname MCINTOSH :
I've also found the Family history at my parents but can't borrow it, so I'll try to gather some info on it to see what other families are related to the McIntosh's

Ah family heritage, gotta love it

I remember in the information on my families history the raincoat being mentioned, but I'm not sure if it was saying that my McIntosh family was directly related to the creator or if it was one of the families that were inconclusive
