Electromagnetic radiation ("light") is already used to observe space, however due to the limitation of the speed of light, it's not really practical to rely on light which originates on Earth. It would take 8.5 years to take measurements from the nearest star to earth other than our sun, 50 millenia from the centre of our galaxy, and about 5 million years from the nearest Galaxy, Andromeda, which is ~2.5 Mly away.
