Well, I'm already back at school. No rest for the wicked I suppose.

...althoughed I would gladly accept your money (as I think the problem is fairly wrapped up :) ).

This is the Answer: You are both in New York City and Kroner tracked you down and told it to you.

"Hmmm, Squeezability, 's that maths too?"

That's more of an Engineering question that requires Math to solve it... The technical term is compression ratio. You would have to add a host of other variables to the problem for it to have any real meaning Engineering-wise. Or just the precise materials used, then you could look up their compression, tension, elascticity, and plasticity.

It would require a lot more work to expand the problem in that direction, not neccesarily a lot of extra conceptualization though.

Oh man, please, mods, lock this topic.

And what's wrong with squeezability? I like squeezing things.

Good guess. I know Sho outside of cantr, but I didn't tell him anything about this problem. Where would the fun be in that? We go to the same school and we're both on the math team so we have some experience with problems like this. I wasn't surprised that he got it. I was actually a bit disappointed because I was hoping to see if anyone on here I don't know enjoys this sort of thing :)

If anyone else has an interesting math problem feel free to post it here! (and please don't lock the thread :D ). Sho and the Indulstriallist, I know one of you must have some good ones.

Ok here's kind of a Trivia/Math Question, What is the Golden Mean? What culture is credited with developing the theory? Also, what is the Golden Mean in its wider context beyond pure Math? (Its a little more Philosophical but it is quite amazing if you understand the implications)

is it (sqrt(5)+1)/2?
that sounds right... and it satisfies x-1 = 1/x

the golden mean is definitely greek.
i don't know the wider context you're referring to.

Yes, that is correct. It is Greek in origin (like almost everything relating to geometry), and I also have no idea what you mean by "wider context" but I do know that the Greeks used it in architecture. We use it in index cards and paper. Ever notice that they all seem to have roughly the same length to width ratio? That ration is the golden ratio. Apparently, it happens to create the rectangle most pleasing to the eye.

Basically its a basic mathmatical foundation for most that grows in the universe, from the sunflower seed, to a rams horn, to the spiral of galaxies... some theorize that it is the math behind growth and evolution. Do some searches on the internet, there is a lot of interesting philisophy and mysticism surrounding it... or could just be the math of growth.

It is also used in art. (paintings). The implementation is a little different as in growing thingies (the way leaves are distributed around the stem) but all great artists used it.

One of my favorite artists is M.C. Escher, it went the other way for him: He made intricate artwork and developed new perspectives for mathmaticians, he new very little to nothing about Math in the way that we think of it...
