I don't really care if what MTV plays is rap, hip hop, techno pop rap or bloody classical celtic rap.

The ins-and-outs of music genres - is it hip-hop, is it rap? seems a little futile and pretty pointless.

As for MTV being controlled by big corporations cashing in on the popularity of rap - of course that's the case - what do you expect from MTV? Of course it censors things, of course it wouldn't show anything controversial, or anything that's not mainstream.

Mainstream rap, hip hop, (or pop - which is probably the better description?) Of course it's crap - but crapiness is subjective, so's art - it's art and it's great to millions of people - let them like it, and take your custom, and your listening/viewing time somewhere else...

Complaining about what MTV plays is similar to wishing BMI would sign a local Islamic dub/electropop fusion band. Not gonna happen Sonny Jim...

That's different. They've been doing that for a long time.

People like whatever the hell they want, Farmer. I can’t stop them. But when you call techno rap, that makes real rappers look stupid. Call something Hip Hop that isn’t, you corrupt the name of Hip Hop.

If I start saying Biz Markie is a jazz musician, Farmer, wouldn’t you say something? That is, if you knew who he was. Bad example.

What if I started calling The Who an “Adult contemporary” band or The Beatles a Russian folk group? What if I call Oasis a latin music sensation?

Oh, and Jethro Tull, let me tell you, those guys can sure as hell lay down some super dope rhymes, eh? Yeah, they are on top of the rap game. And the So-Solid Crew? Best composers I’ve ever heard.

See, it is just stupid.

Of course what is good and bad is subjective. As I say, like what you like, there’s nothing to be done. Names however, are not subjective. You can’t call Communists Monarchists, you can’t call Monarchists Islamic Socialists, you can’t call Social Democrats National Socialists. It doesn’t work.

I’m just saying stop misusing the name.

As for my listening time, believe me, I do. I sometimes listen to MTV, but not to hear music I like.

But your right. Complaining about what MTV plays is like complaining about CAT selling bulldozers to the Israeli Army, or Coke using Indian groundwater and ruining the environment. None of those things are going to stop, so why say anything? Your absolutely right. In fact, let’s just stop complaining altogether.

Don’t worry about me anymore. I’ve mellowed out. Everything’s doubleplusgood.

That what you want?

Of course not.

But that's rap? And MTV plays that.

It's alot more pop music than it is hip hop.

They call it rap, they take things from hip hop, but all that's left of hip hop when they're done with it is a butchered corpse with it's left arm and half it's organs missing.

I watch it. Mostly during commercials. It's hard to avoid it, really.

I don't like it, though.

Recently a video that was to be played on BET (I forget the title) got banned for being too intelligent.
That's what's happening to the genre, schme.

You have an excellent memory schme, I was surprised at your knowledge of un-publicised attrocities, until I realised the point you were tryin to make.
but, yes, what music MTV plays is as important as thousands of innocent lives and livelihoods.

As for what is Hip Hop, what is rap, and what is pop, what is techno rap, what is salsa and what is Scandanavian astro-house - yeah, point conceeded, MTV plays pop, not hip hop.
But I knew that, I'm not a great hip-hop fan, but I can tell the difference. Some people can't tell the difference - if someone is talking fast over beat - that's rap to them, which means hip hop.
The same way I probably couldn't tell the difference between Croatian and Slovenian folk music - the differences are too subtle. And yes, there is a large grey area between pop and hip hop.
Lines can be drawn, and the uneducated should be told what is just not really hip hop, but the hip hop/pop lines are much more subtle than the examples you were giving.

Why not just classify it all as 'urban' and be done with it?

R(retards)A(attempting)P(poetry)

hehe, just thought I would share that. If other people like rap, it doesn't hurt me any. I absolutely despise it with all my heart, but, hey, not everyone is perfect like me.

I like Eminem sometimes. But not like I'd go dressing up as a gangsta
nigga because of that. How many people over 20 you see putting on a
uniform of a sub-culture:?: I wish there was a simple way to run a poll
on this.

Image

Man is a social animal, in the teenage, the meaning of fitting in the pack is
enhanced. Because the environment (mainly school) gives room for
ganging up, young people will do it. Because that's what makes them feel
secure. (And in here I don't mean a gang with established symbols and
statuses but a pack of people of the same age, starting from two girls
giggling together to hoardes of boys with dozens of people in the pack.)

Image

As a teen you won't got many reasons to be proud of yourself and have
high self-esteem, you get zits, you get a growth spurt and end up looking
like a flag pole, girls start bulging in butt and bosom and guys have their
voice break. As an individual, you're nothing. But together as a pack you
are strong.

Image

This phenomenon has existed as long as there's been a group called the
teenagers. Before there was no such thing, there were the children and
the adults, nothing in the middle. (And even before that there were adults
and small adults.) But as we give room for rebellion and packing, it
will happen. Before kids grew up in farms, working hard from early age,
there was no room for rebellion. The next neighbour was a couple of miles
away, the only company you got was your siblings and maybe cousins.

Image

But urban environment brings people closer together. We start public
schools. We make laws that make it impossible for teachers to keep
dicipline. Add in breaks (I got the impression that in other countries they
are less often but in Finland, kids usually go out once every hour for 15
minutes, rain or shine or subzero temperatures.) give kids time to
socialize and voila, you got pack behaviour.

Image

Music in fact has very little to do with this. It's only a small part of what
creates the feeling of unity. There's the uniform, the way you act, the way
you talk, where are you going, what are you buying... Hip hop just
happens to be the word of today. Before we got punks, hippies, beatniks
and all in between. Don't worry, it will pass. But a new popular culture will
rise to replace it.

Image

They say you'll always listen to the music that you listened when you were
young. We cannot understand the new ones rising and in fifty years the
teens will be laughing at the "oldies", 20-00's music. While we in the old
folks home are listening to Eminem from antique CD's...

(Since I had trouble reading all the long posts in this topic, I hope the pictures and short lines help with concentration.)
