there are two types of food in cantr: regular foods and healing foods.
-regular foods you will eat automatically once a day. if you don't have regular food when it comes time to eat, you'll get the message that you're hungry.
-healing foods can be eaten at anytime to heal damage.
it's sort of arbitrary which is which, so ask around in game about which foods are which, or if theirs no regular food in your location, ask where you can find some.

It's going to depend on what food you've gathered - not everything can be consumed without preparation and you'll find different foods vary in how good they are at satisfying hunger and healing damage.
Are there other characters around in the area where you've spawned? If so, the best place to start is asking them - that way, there's no danger of breaking the "capital rule" by taking out of game knowledge into the game (and it's a good in-game discussion starter).

You're not stupid, it happens to just about everyone when they start.
What you may consider food intuitively may be something slightly different in Cantr. You might think meat is just meat, but I bet you don't eat meat in real life unless it's been cooked some. Things thare sweets or used mostly in baking aren't usually daily staples in the real world either. People don't live off apples, the would have them for a snack, then go hunt or gather something. Daily staples are ususally thing you'd expect to find in stews or other hearty meals.
Anyway ... the party line is "Find out in game", so I'd reccomend asking people around you for help, and hope they're awake.

Reality was never my strong point.
