How much of the Wiki do my characters know?

Postby psymann » Wed Nov 15, 2006 12:53 pm

My characters clearly know how to make things - I don't have to find a recipe and an instruction manual before I grill meat on a stone fire pit, and I don't need to have training before I can design and make a wool coat. All this information is present on the Wiki and on the in-game manufacturing pages where I choose what I want to make.

Does this mean that my characters are spawned with full knowledge of what can be made? So in other words:

- does my character know that he can make a club using some large bones, even if he hasn't got any bones?
- does my character know that he can make some sandals out of hide and sinew if he has the hide but has never seen any sinew?
- does my character know all the things he can make out of potatoes?
etc

If the answer to any of the above is "no", then how is he meant to find out?

Hmm, just re-reading the Wiki front page:

From Wiki: "This wiki is to help increase your understanding of the world of Cantr. This does not necessarily mean that your character must pretend he knows everything in the wiki."

From this I gather it to mean that, under my discretion, my character may know anything between none and all of the wiki contents, so that the answer to all the above questions is "up to you". Am I right?

Correct.

It was unfair before when older players would know more about the game becuase they new more of the things which could be made.

But now, it gets a little dull as there's no excitement in seeing new/strange/impressive machines and vehicles.

I find it best to RP a level of knowledge fitting for individual characters. That way, a sports car will hold fascination, a new resource will hold intrigue etc.
It'd be nice if poeple did RP surprise and wonder more often...
Whoever you vote for.

When I started, there was no wiki, and older chars would tell you nothing, (or some of them,). Now chars potentially know everything... that's what they've been learning, I guess, in their first 20 years.
But yes, the thrill of discovery has been reduced. Not entirely eliminated, one of my chars is having fun with a project that she is not sure how it will work. You just have to play it as you feel appropriate.

Thanks all,

Sounds as if it's had quite a discussion in the past!

Have to say I think the Wiki is a great thing, and the fact I can't discover anything new in-game is outweighed by the benefit of me knowing what I'm doing.

As the list of things you can make increases (which I hope it does, and expect it will given then suggestion forum's pinned topics) there should be discovery as you discover what's in the ever-increasing wiki - only the other day an old player discovered you could make something or other that they'd just not noticed in the Wiki.

Anyway, that's all great, it means my character is allowed to be knowledgable on certain aspects as befits his personality and interests, and ignorant on things that I wouldn't expect him to know about. And that's good :D

Usually how I handle this is if my character reads about a certain resource on the map (If its not there I pretend like they've never heard of it), even if it's on the other side of the continent they'll know what it's for, but don't know every little detail like the exact gathering rate. Or if I have a char that's awkward at sewing, they may only have the vaguest idea of what machines are needed and how much work goes into making an outfit...and it would be the opposite if they were an expert.

Of course this is just a general guideline, it can be different for dfferent characters. For instance I have kind of an obsessive control freak business owner that will precisely calculate everything down to the last hour and gram and basically carries the entire wiki around in their head, and then I have a char in a primitive town that's never been anywhere else and only knows about things in that one location.

Matching speed

Postby tiddy ogg » Fri Nov 17, 2006 8:48 am

My char is in a vehicle. I try to match the speed to that of a pedestrian, but when I check, it still says he's walking slower.
Is it possible to match vehicle and walking speeds?

No, currently you can only automatically match speeds if you and the target are walking (and the target is not faster than your maximum speed)

You can try manually matching speed
