Winter Olympics (a pinch of patriotic films)

Postby funetik » Thu Feb 23, 2006 8:47 pm

I was having an interesting conversation with a friend on msn and he mentioned the film - The Mighty Ducks. You know the one - a bunch of kids who are crap at ice hockey and then they become great all of a sudden... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104868/

Anyway, he said the film was patriotic to America.. I asked "why?" and he said "They play against Russia, Italy and the world allstars"

And it clicked. Russia - Communism and the whole cold war thing. Italy - Mussolini and Fascism. The world - well, make of it what you will :P

Not bashing America, before anyone gets upset... just thought it was interesting though :)

Can anyone think of any other films that are patriotic to a certain country, any country, in a way like that?

Maybe it's all a coincidence, just seemed amusing though :D

Go US! We're almost winning the olympics! I'm not even sure if they're over or not!

That's interesting. I've been waiting to see how long it would take for an Olympic's reference on this forum. Unless I missed it, this is the first one.

Since I work for GE in Marketing I was curious about the audience of the Olympics globally. Maybe its just the nature of this forum, but I was very surprised there wasn't any talk about the games, especially with the Hockey results and the Speed Skating.

You haven't been in the IRC.

Echoman and I have been more or less following it, and discussing it.

Sunday? I think that's when they end.

Some of the U.S. people have disappointed me and made me irritated...

(Shani Davis, Chad Hedricks (sp?), and that woman snowboarder!!!)

My heck, lighten up, we're slaughtering the bulk of the competition and it's not even over yet. I think.

No, it's just that Shani and Chad were really immature.

But for the most part I'm satisfied... except with our skiing team. That failed badly.

Sorry but in the Mighty Ducks they didn't play any foriegn teams. In the Mighty Ducks 2 they played in some sort of kids olympics where they played the foriegn teams.

I wouldn't use slaughtering as the word of choice.
The United States is doing well, but thats only because we've pumped as many athletes as we could into the Winter Games. I believe we've brought more atheletes than any other nation and I'm fairly certain we've got men and women in every event.

But we're not even leading the medal counts. It's 24 Germany, 20 US. As much boasting as the US did before the games and predictions made for strongest Olympic team to-date, I've seen more American letdowns than sweeps.

Jeremy Bloom, Bode Miller, Mens Hockey, Shauni Davis (Mens Speed Skating Relay)

I find it interesting that we're not doing much better because of the facilities of winter events available to US athletes. Our main competition is mainly Eurpoean and South East Asian, far different than the Summer Games. But yet in 2004 we posted 102 medals compared to Russia's 93 or so.

From the events I've seen, I've been dissappointed by names I've been watching since last year. On the plus, we've got the advantage in Snowboarding because we invented the sport and American competitions are what the Olympic judgings are based on for points. Plus I doubt they've made alot of halfpipes in Kazikstan.

All in all, mediocre US performance when compared to all the hype.

So is this turning into an Olympics topic? In that case, HA HA, the Finnish hockey team kicked US ass big time! Well, not so big time but they still won. I was watching the latter half and saw the messing around, saw them letting in one goal and I was screaming at the TV "watch out!" Oh and I read from Yahoo sports news that someone knocked out two teeth from Teemu Selänne. Ouch! I remember seeing him getting bashed at the side once, and the ref didn't do jack shit about it. But we won anyway.

Looks like it *sighs*
My first ever thread, hijacked... I hope you all feel bad

It was pretty bad anyway, feel free to change the topic name. edit: I didn't realise I could :)

As for the olympics, I'm not all that interested.. the Top Gear (UK car show) winter olympics rocked though :D

They put rockets on an original mini and launched it off a ski jump. Had a game of ice hockey with 10 cars etc :)

And then 90% of all Olympic Hockey players return to the NHL. American and Canadian resources brought those medals in, IMO.
