Sanitation

Postby Solfius » Sun Jul 20, 2003 2:22 pm

ok, this is a potenitally disgusting subject, but it is very important from a social point of view as all countires suffered from high disease rates until they installed proper sanitation (sewers, clean water etc). Also in some societies people who dealt with the mess were considered sub-human and not to be associated with.

My vague idea is:

put in some kind of...um...character waste production, that is to say: make characters produce excrement.

Lots of unclean excrement would produce disease, so there would have to be ways of getting rid of it.

Perhaps burying it, putting it in a room.

if you were to bury it, you could do it with your bare hands, but would suffer from a high chance of disease. If you did it with a shovel you would not have such a high risk.

Perhaps toilets would be introduced and remove the need for people to manually move the waste, but they would be fairly advanced, and require water.

Initial thoughts?

I believe this idea would also help the social aspect of the game. (Which helps make things more interesting in the game for some people- including myself)

How would you do it though?
Perhaps like ..."You eat 100 grams of your potatoes. You defacate" LOL

Or maybe "You eat 100 grams of your potatoes. You intestines are full"

lol

If someone should implement this I think there should be more reason to it than just disease. I believe if this idea is implemented ......there should be a way for our characters to know they are going to "poop or pee" LOL
This way outhouses can be added....and eventually indoor plumbing. Hey...it will give us a reason to have water for once. I THINK THIS IS the best idea I've ever seen. Not because it can be disgusting.......But because ...it would seriously give our characters something else to do.......

No..growing in a town never stops. But you do reach a point in a town where you have done everything you possibly can like- ...made it to building a car. Then what do you do? (the game tends to get drawn out and boring for some people when you reach that point) Adding a new feature/ human waste would give another must to build in towns. Something some towns are lacking right now. Some towns have got their cars and all of the furnaces and ovens. Now they just have to do what they've already accomplished repeatedly. They need something new in towns....so they can stand there and say.."CHECK OUT THE NEW OUTHOUSE..."

And when i say a new feature that would lead to building I mean ...just like my quoted things above..
"You eat 100 grams of potatoes- your blatter becomes 25 % more full" If people don't go to the bathroom it creates health hazards for the character too.
Just like when they run low on food and don't eat causes starvation.......not emptying their bladder etc would lead to bloating ....and possibly death should they not "go to the bathroom"

GREAT IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I keep sounding negative, but this doesn't seem like a good idea to me. There are already a lot of things affecting a player's health: people attacking, animals attacking, no food.

Plus there are things that a game should not address. Having babies is borderline as it is. The less mention of your hoobie stick, the better.

Dominics hooby stick? lol....Although it was always made to sound as though he were perverted I do believe it was later revealed that he was talking about something else. Before the game went down. Besides the fact i was never derogatory/punctually vulgar/ bluntly outward about it being something of the nature of manhood!
I do see your point...however I fail to see how using the bathroom is a touch subject. Its something all things do....and all people know it happens. But....then again thats just my opinion.

In defense.

Maybe a more generic way then?

X amount of people give Y percent chance of disease if nothing is done.

"trash" objects gather as people eat "potatoe skins", "rinds"...etc.

I don't think that going to the bathroom is a good idea. For one thing if you are travelingyou would have to "go" on the roadwich would cuase a greater chance of getting sick then people wouldn't want to travel as much. The other thing is that you would have to get on every day and go inot a building that has a toilet.

Thanks Cathy ;) a lot of my ideas end up on this list :(

I don't think it makes the game less fun, it wouldn't happen that often, and wouldn't be overly inrusive I don't think

I think if people can deal with dead bodies on the street they can deal with poop on the street. As for diseases I don't agree with that being a factor. I think it should be like dead bodies. Sure you don't HAVE to bury them and waste 2 hours of the day, but what will people think when they come to a town and see hundreds of dead bodies and poop all around.

I strongly disagree there. I think disease should be in the game, and bodies (not skeletons, no flesh, no bacteria feeding on the flesh, no disease) and waste should increase the risk of getting ill.

Yes, diseases seems like a very good idea for the game.

In that way people would get more motivated to sleep indoors and burying bodies.

In the animals-thread I dropped the advice that unsheltered food and dead bodies would attract vermin and that they would bring diseases.

I really disagree with diseases unless you come up with a way to cure each one. Maybe add a medicine tab under the manufacturing page and you have to collect certain things to make the medicine.

Yes, there would be cures, but you'd have to find them. Some dieseases might only go away with rest, like the common cold.

I like the idea of the medicine manufacturing... Maybe implemented with an Alchemy skill of some kind... I dunno but eating cookies doesn't necessarily heal my bruises lol!

ah, but it gives you energy, which is your strength. Health would be a different attribute, but would have a direct relationship with strength
