Choice of name & dynamic naming for locks

Postby formerly known as hf » Sat Jun 10, 2006 1:24 pm

When we start a building or vehicle, we are asked to provide a name for it - this should also be the case for locks.

Then, the unique identifier for a lock would be the name it has been given, and any keys for that lock would be named 'Key for lock: xxx'

(Obviously there would have to be a mechanism to make sure the same name isn't used for different locks)

Alongside this, something which has been requested many times, the lock and key names should be dynamic.

Please :) ?

Something like this has already been suggested.

The previous suggestion was that the keys should have the name of the building it belongs to.

But i do like this idea, and this idea might be better since no one are able to know where the key goes to.

The following statement is not true.

Dynamically named locks wouldn't need to be checked for uniqueness, because they can be renamed at will.

Otherwise I think this is an excellent idea and long overdue

Wouldn't it just be easier to attach the key name with the dynamic name of the building/vehicle.

Say the key for the building of "Church of XXRED" would just be read as "Key for Church of XXRED"

but you can name buildings the same, so you could end up with keys named the same, or you may not want the keys to places to be obvious.

With dynamic names you could choose to name the lock the same as the building, but you also have the option to do something else

I am more of a fan of dynamically named keys, as you could rename them when you make the lock, but no-one will know what they are to unless you tell them...

Seems realistic to me. The problem I see with naming the lock is that there are many locks in game for which this cannot be implemented... but that shouldn't stop it, I suppose.

Bottom line: Dynamic names for keys. Seriously. Please.

I suggested Keyrings before... so you could name the keyring and put the key that corresponds onto it... but it was rejected I believe.

Yes please on the dynamic names for keys. 'Storage room' would be a lot easier to remember that 2352626363734742775378572573. (which is what it's eventully going to be...we're up to seven digits already and new locks are being made all the time.)

I agree. I'm already confused because half my characters have random keys and I have tried to enter all the buildings in my town to see if the key would fit ... needless to say, I'm still trying after a couple of years...
