Seasons

Postby Nick » Fri Nov 28, 2003 6:52 pm

If the seasons that are planned to be implemented to cantr are going to be resembling those of the real world, there arises a few problems, if my math is correct.

If theres only 20 days in a year... every 5 days the season would change, assuming there are 4 equal seasons in a year like in the "real" world.

Doesn't seem very long at all, a 5 day season, but then 20 days to complete a farming cycle, that seems resonable, but all the same, perhaps make years a little longer so we have time to get a feel for each of the seasons? 7 days per season? maybe 10? I don't know, but it seems very fast to cycle through the seasons in 20 days

This is cantr who says it has to make sence, why not have two year long seasons? Give me a real proper reason why that wouldn't work. I don't assume there to be a problem with it, other then the whole RW hangup but if that's it then go outside once in a while and that will satisfy your urges for RW stuff.

This has been an Anti-Real World Broadcast

or just cut out autaumn and summer.

or even better, cut out seasons altogether as they are a concept created by us people, instead have a gradual and constanlty changing weather system and leave us to make up our own seasons

Personally, I dont even think that the dating sytem should have been used. The programmers have generally left things like currency (ie: Quii), measurement (ie:the horsebite), etc to be done by the characters... why can't years? I know in the real world, there have been many definitions of a year. Most of the world has pretty much standardized on the Gregorian Calendar (correct me if I am wrong, I would be interested to find a place that still mostly uses a different calendar). Perhaps in Cantr II 2.0, time should be left up to the characters to measure? The definition of a day should stay the same, but things like years, months, etc should be left to be decided. And I like Solfius' similar comment on seasons.... they shouldnt be known to the characters, they should just realise that for a certain length of time, it gets cold, and there is a periodic interval of weather patterns.

expanding on that idea, shouldn't we be able to know our age in days, as that is the only visble unit of time (i'm assuming a visable change from day to day, like day and night in RL)

Personally, I dont think you should know anything that you dont record. IRL, if you never recorded your birthday, and didnt pay attention to when you got older, you wouldnt know your age.

perhaps an age amnesty then, so you can see how old you are, to give you the chance to record it, and then set it to blanks and make people record it themselves.

But then, what about the genric name for someone you don't know? What would become of that, it would need to be replaced with something, and how do you know a man is in their twenties if years aren't measured. My idea to get round that would be to have older or younger than you, rather than in their twenties or whatever

How about instead of age, you see a description of a person like color of hair, eye color, body type, clothes being worn, facial hair etc.....

For example;

a lean man with red short hair and green eyes wearing leather breeches and a silk shirt.

Plus one can always get fat, or grow some facial hair, or grow their hair longer or cut it all off. So this could be a way that someone can change their appearance. That way if someone is running from the law they can change the way they look so law enforcement in other areas will overlook them because they don't fit the description of the criminal they are looking for.

But in all reality, if you got to know someone, you wouldnt be fooled by them growing a moustache. Perhaps there should be a way to stop that?

yea, but if you name them then you recognise them. SO enforcment agencies could give otu a description of the person, so people who didn't see it would recognise him, and then that person could change their appearacne so that people who don't name him can't recognisse him
