Yes there was a Cantr 1. At least that is what I understand from reading the forums. However nobody but the oldbees remember it.

The original Cantr was basically a pencil-and-paper RPG played through e-mail; http://cantr.net/mwiki/index.php/Game_Background has more detail on the history of Cantr.

Cantr I was a play by e-mail game that Jos started and never went anywhere a long, long time ago.

Most of the oldies here never played that (except Jos, obviously) as most of the oldiers are 200 day+. Most of the players under 200 days have since pass on though a few of them lurk here and there.

I read that link. It was written in October 2003, and mentions a Cantr II v2.0 :?:
I'm new here, so has that happened already? Is the current 'version' v2.0? If not, what happened?

No the current version is just Cantr II

The plan for v2.0 is best described in the following post Roadmap

EDIT:
As to what happened, we are moving towards a lot of the goals listed in the Roadmap.... slowly... but in that direction

Yes, the only other player that was in both Cantr I and II is Sico. Cantr I had at its peak something like 7 players, I think, only existed for a few weeks (two or three), and was an utter failure. Just a very badly designed game.

As for 2.0, I had a team set up to work on that, and a separate forum and website, but soon decided that it wasn't going to work, and then integrated it with the current Cantr development indeed with the so-called roadmap. I've made many, many attempts to start working on a rewrite of Cantr, but the task is too daunting :) ... Especially with the high expectations I have of it.

Crushed by the weight of your own dreams? I know the feeling. Nothing you can do will ever be perfect, you just have to design it so it's easy to change it later. But at least Cantr works. I've been playing a game for 7 years now that pretty much everyone agrees is "broken" but the players keep playing because they've invested 1/4 of their lives on it, and the creator won't fix it because the changes would be to radical and require a reset. Catch-22.

Hahaha

Ok, to be sure: Cantr I was an attempt to replace the lego, already, but I don't think we had quite stopped yet. It was only two months before Cantr II, though, and Cantr II made us stop our lego game. If I remember it all correctly. We first tried to transfer all our lego chars to Cantr II, but that was too daunting a job (too many objects to transfer etc.) and never really happened.

And my mother did not take away my legos ;) ... We played up to four years ago, when I was already 25 - my mother had nothing to say about me and the lego by then ;) ...

It's kind of a sci-fi political game (or that's what it's become). Ironicly, the ships are built like legos. The player base is so small that everyone knows nearly everyone else, which means you have to go to great lengths to get away with anything

It says it's different to all the other space ship mmorpg games on the net...but is it? I really don't see how it can be after I read the instructions.
