Castle Guards (couldn't think of a generic name)

Postby Thetaris » Tue Jan 10, 2006 10:12 pm

This idea can have castle guards!

Basically, a person stands guard at a door. He cannot harvest or work or anything, but so long as he is there, no one can get in (unless he allows them). This way, a King could have two guards that bandits have to fight through to get in.

You could have up to two guards per door at a time. And it would also stop thieves entering your unlocked building while you wait for someone or something.

That sounds like a royal pain in the ass which having more than one copy of a key (or being more proficient with that one copy) would resolve.

It sounds good to me but what happens if they don't wake up to let people through?
Any chance of some sort of password system that would work even if they were asleep, or would that be too much automation?
Yuk yuk yuk.

Like this idea?

I thought Seko posted a good suggestion once similar to this but I can't seem to find it at the moment. Perhaps Farmer or Sho will have better luck.

Hmm, yeah, I think it's inside that topic you linked, conserning the guarding of people.

If guarding doors was enabled, maybe they could define a list of allowed people, then you wouldn't have to wait for the guard to let you in. The problem is that Jos hates automation. Also the guards would stop guarding if they were damaged enough, or dragged away. And maybe if the character wasn't checked for over a day or so, the guarding efficiency would start degrading and the longer the character stays unchecked, the easier it would be to slip in. But the amount of attempts would be limited, otherwise if one failed, they could just keep trying until succeeding. Maybe once an hour?

I don't think this is needed; as Nitefyre said, you can do the same thing with a key or two and a resonably alert character.

And as much as it doesn't seem so, it is hard enough to play a good bad guy in this game without cheating. I would love to see the function so I could have a hope of playing a guard character, but it would throw off the game balance too badly.

That's a bright idea... Guards are sleeping, and a thief keeps trying to sneak around them but he gets scared off as they snore... and roll over... And by the time he successfully gets in, or doesn't, the guards are awake and shoo the thief away, lock him up or kill him!
