Even if we told you here, your chars would have to figure it out anyway, so it really doesn't matter. And if you're talking about the continent wiith Karnon on it, nobody there has made any steel yet (to my knowledge), so they don't know either.

*singing*
find it out in-game, find it out in-game/
it's much more satisfying when you find it out in-game/
doing things the easy way is certainly quite lame/
if no one tells you how, you've got just yourself to blame!
actually I'm not sure either...which is ridiculous...but i'ts been so long and they changed the rules anyway...

The rules for steel have not been changed for months.
@Charlos: The others are correct. Your characters are supposed to find that out. Two things: 1. Smelting (hint!) steel is nothing that you decide today and do tomorrow. Being impatient will just add to the frustration.
2. Your character could think about what he is able to build. Maybe there's something that sounds as if it could help with "making" steel.

Well they did have steel. They used it on the pick-axes so they 'did' have steel or at least traded with someone that had steel and made the pick-axes. It could also be that they found the pick-axes on some dead bodies or laying about. There could be a number of reason of how they obtained the pick-axes.
Why don't you try asking the people who have the pick-axes where they got them?

In JherodJ defense. The purpose of some 20 years olds in a society is to question everything and demand everything right now. While your older chracters can lambast his chracters for it players shouldn't try to silence it.
On the other hand I think there needs to be more chracters that only understand the circumstance they were born into. If you were born in Cantr City and organization outside of the food service should inspire suspicion and fear. A representative democracy introduced in Cantr City should get the same reacton as if someone said that they were starting a dictatorship. Cantr City folk underestand that the bread they eat didn't come from a goverment. And anyone manipulating the food serivce comes dangerouslly close to letting everyone starve.

About the people with pickaxes...I don't think I've seen any in the Karnon area, but maybe I'm not in the right places. However, all the older continents have at least one area with the capacity to make steel I believe. Just be patient, and someday you may find out. And remember, you can always have a char buy stuff off someone else. After all, I didn't make this computer I'm typing this on by myself... I got it from a store. (but whether I paid for it or not is an entirely different matter
)

yeah...Charlo...
not every city is on the same continent...the Karnon area is less than 2 RL months old, and has no steel-making facilities yet...that I've seen, and I'm in a very good position to know these things...you may have seen them in another city on another land, but yeah...none in Karnon so far.
